  Temple Rat’s music is more than just a sequence of rhythms; it is a meticulously crafted world defined by cinematic depth and organic, emotionally driven storytelling. Based in Berlin, the project is the alias of Yuxin Mei, a Chinese composer and multi-instrumentalist who has spent years honing a sound that bridges the gap between ancient Eastern textures and the raw intensity of contemporary electronic music. In her artistic practice, Mei explores the relationship between space, environment, and sound. While the Erhu remains a central pillar of her work, her productions weave a rich tapestry of Chinese woodwinds, percussion, and traditional flutes. By utilising self-built sound-design tools and intricate field recordings, she crafts a distinctive sonic identity that leans on deep listening and experimental spatial-audio techniques. This philosophy extends beyond the club into the world of interactive installations and cross-cultural curation, notably through her collectives “Er Ting Ba Fang” (耳聽八方) and “Jia La.” Since her acclaimed EP Composition of Air on Siamese Twins Records, Temple Rat’s evolution has been marked by a constant desire to push boundaries. Her work has received international praise for its ability to balance traditional delicacy with modern industrial grit, leading her to iconic clubs including Berghain, Macadam and RSO. Her recent discography expands with the 2026 release of Some Leaves Must Fall 聽其自然 on the label Buttheads, a project that further explores her signature blend of organic instrumentation and sophisticated electronic structures. On stage, Temple Rat is known for her atmospheric performances, whether in her machine-heavy live shows or her eclectic DJ sets. She remains dedicated to the transformative power of sound, ensuring that every performance acts as a bridge between the heritage of the past and the sonic possibilities of the future.

  At age 22 she approached the local scene as Djane with numerous performances in the club circuit of Bari. Through the years she has developed a continued and careful respect of the musical experience. She moved to Berlin in 2011 and started DJing with only vinyl records. This helped her to build a strong reputation as an underground techno DJ, providing opportunity for her to play in clubs such as Tresor, About Blank, SchwuZ, SO36 and Mikz in Berlin where she lives today. In September 2011, she moved to Detroit where she started the collaboration with DJ Seoul, Tom and Angie Linder of Detroit Techno Militia. This travel has definitely and radically changed her approach to the techno concept, which she considers more a political and social phenomenon and a lifestyle than just a musical genre. From 2012 till 2016 she joined the party Homopatik as resident dj. Her first releases on vinyl came out in 2014 on DTM-Label (Detroit) and Arkita Records (Berlin), the label that she spawned together with Synkopheit till 2016. In 2017 she launched her own record label Future Déjà Vu releasing 4 EP respectively by Transient X4, Ken Karter, Mannella a.k.a. DHARAXT, Phontonz & Shcuro. In September 2017 she played her first house set for the summer closing of the Berlin based party Buttons. In Summer 2018 Madalba became resident dj at the historical club Tresor in Berlin. The same year she started a new collaboration with the London based crew Aria with a party series in the UK capital. Currently, she is techno resident dj and co-organizer of the party Buttons in About Blank teaming with Danilo Rosato, Anna Bolena, Jabob Meehan, Shingo Suwa, Akirahawks, Paolo Di Nola and Stanley Schmidt.
