Solo production highlights since Electrical Encounters include Hundred Flowers on Coastal Haze, Why Me? on Ghostly’s Spectral Sound, Orlando on !K7 Records, Ecstatic Editions vol. 1, the premiere release on Eris Drew’s vinyl-only label, and her pièce de résistance; the 2023 debut album Homesick, which she toured live internationally in 2024. Collaboratively, Ciel’s efforts are just as impressive, from the intricate, delicate Free EP with Kilig to the subterranean, propulsive Lunagenesis with Priori as Loopchasers. Danilo Plessow aka MCDE. A DJ’s DJ in every sense of the word - he is one of modern dance music’s most venerated. A consummate DJ who stands for something richer: taste over trends, context over convenience, and connection over spectacle. For over 25 years Danilo has been uncompromising in his approach. Technically crafty, instinctually curious and armed with an expansive knowledge shaped by jazz, soul and disco roots – his work celebrates musical lineage while keeping the dancefloor firmly in the present. At a time where club culture has been hollowed out under the pressure of commercialism - Danilo Plessow is deadly serious about placing music before image. The CV is commanding. A production discography of club weapons that are commonly found in record bags throughout clubs & festivals globally. Shakolin is a long-time resident DJ of Closer in Kyiv. Since his relocation to Berlin, he has opened a new chapter in his sonic journey with Delirious, a vinyl-only record label and party series at Panorama Bar, which he co-curates with his artistic and life partner, Karine. As Lawrence, Kersten has released three deep and melacholic longplayers. First turned onto techno by the original wave of acid house, by 1997 Kersten began producing his own music. "The different projects stand somehow close to another," he says. "Sten is the more minimal and straight part of me, strictly influenced by the part of my life on the dancefloor.” However, Lawrence is the project which has been catching the most attention. The first eponymous 'Lawrence' album (Ladomat, 2002) was a mixture of house, minimal techno and experimental pieces, while the second one, 'The Absence of Blight' (Dial, 2003) had a straighter touch. She studied classical piano at the Conservatoire. Over time, she became increasingly interested in the possibilities of unconventional sound sources and started to incorporate these into her compositions. Experimenting with sonic memories, everyday objects and sounds from surrounding environments allow her to create music that is both deeply personal and universally resonant. Margaux Gazur started to work with field recording to capture her daily life in Hanoi as a sonic memory. She has been composing soundscapes for her dad’s martial art videos, using recordings from those sessions, including the sounds of traditional martial art weapons and instruments used for celebrations. She then expanded this approach to her own projects. In her recent work, she has been exploring the sounds of various acoustic instruments, moving away from the traditional music theory. She uses the instruments as an experiential medium, focusing on the diverse sounds and emotions they can produce. Soon after moving to Berlin in 2015, she came upon a passion for collecting records – starting with hip-hop, funk, soul, jazz and boogie. At a certain point, she began to receive some invitations to play her collection out at bars, which was around the same time she began going out to dance in the city’s clubs – her wider investigation of electronic dance music soon followed. So one could say Stella’s DJ practice began with collecting, then gained dimension as a selector and dancer, and this is audible in her sound – she plays sets that stoke a warmth in the body and keep it lit, sequences of deep-dug cuts that are mixed with a tactile intuition and trust in the track that only a vinyl DJ could have. Over the years, Stella has become a signature member of Berlin’s club community, enacting an old-school ethic of the DJ as a community-driven role. Today she is well-known for her wide knowledge of classic, groove-driven house and disco, as well as deep dubs and acid, but her rise as a DJ came hand-in-hand with booking and curating. After a number of years organising parties at the DIY venue Kake Stella founded Body Language with Camilla Rae and Caitlin Russell in 2021. Gaining a committed crowd over the last years, Body Language has hosted a vibrant array of international and local DJs. Rather than needing to brand the party with markers of identity, Stella emphasises the core ethic of the party being its openness – the function encourages a range of sounds and styles (one can hear everything from clever, groovy house and techno to classic Chicago cuts to RnB-laced high-NRG in recorded sets on SoundCloud) and so welcomes a heterogenous crowd. In this way, Body Language is part of a shift into a new line of queer parties in Berlin – “queer” precisely because diversity runs through its bookings, its sound systems, its dancefloors, and isn’t just a catchword printed on a statement. Although Stella’s original plans to become a singer were quickly overtaken by the drive to play out her record collection, 2022 saw the release of Détends-Toi and the formation of Stella and the Longos, a band and collaborative project with DJ and musician Ed Longo. Released on Cosmic Records, the album is a sensual tribute to 80s Zouk and Boogie, with Stella’s silky, sultry vocals taking the fore. Much like her DJ-practice, the project pays loving homage to sounds of the past while spinning them into the present, never simply lapsing into nostalgia. The 6-piece band has toured extensively over the last years, which has provided a counterpoint to Stella’s increasingly international DJ gigs – some notable bookings include Nowadays, De School, Gay Haze and a stint of sets in China last year. Closer to home, she has been a resident at Cocktail D’Amore since its heyday years at Griessmühle and played at Panorama Bar for the first residency night programmed by Refuge Worldwide, where she also hosts the Breakfast Show once a month.
