Innerhalb weniger Jahre katapultierte der unverwechselbare Sound das Herzensprojekts der zwei Brüder Tom und Ed Russel vom britischen Underground an die Spitze der britischen elektronischen Musikszene. Overmono katalysiert alle Facetten von UK-Rave-Historie und destilliert daraus die Zukunft der globalen Szene.
Beide Brüder hatten sich bereits als Truss und Tessela in der elektronischen Musikszene etabliert. Doch mit vereinten Kräften folgte als Overmono ein kometenhafter Aufstieg. Der Durchbruch mit der legendären Hitsingle „So U Kno“ (2021) zu UK-Tastemakern ließ nicht lange auf sich warten. Ihr Debutalbum „Good Lies“ (2023) besiegelte ihr Schicksal als absolute Ausnahmeerscheinung in der elektronischen Musikszene weit über die Grenzen der UK hinaus. Der Guardian bezeichnete das Album schlicht als „UK-Rave-Geschichte in Perfektion“. Die folgenden Kollaborationen mit Joy Orbison, High Contrast, Fred Again.., Lil Yachty, The Streets und Kwengface sprechen eine genauso unmissverständliche Sprache: Overmono gehört zum heißesten, was die UK zu bieten an.
Der Name ihrer Liveshow, mit der die beiden seit 2024 touren, ist Programm: Pure Devotion. Sie sorgte unter anderem für eine ausverkaufte Show im legendären Londoner Alexandra Palace, machte sie zu Headlinern bei Glostonbury und ließ sie das berüchtigte Manchester Warehouse Project kuratieren. Auftritte bei Primavera und Coachella standen selbstverständlich auch auf dem Plan.
Das neue Album „Pure Devotion“, das dieses Jahr erscheint, trägt nicht nur denselben Namen, sondern ist auch Teil desselben Mantras: Liebe, Ehrlichkeit und Hingabe. Diese drei Säulen tragen Overmonos kreativen Prozess. Es geht darum denselben Geist und Ethos zu kultivieren, bei dem Emotion vor Desensibilisierung steht und Handwerk vor Effizienz. Das Album ist ein Herzensprojekt – pure Hingabe eben – und wird Overmonos ikonenhaften Status nur weiter zementieren.
Aus Breakbeat, Garage, Jungle, Ambient, Grime und Techno haben Overmono ihre gänzliche eigene Sprache hervorgebracht. Sie handelt von Nostalgie und Zukunft, von Erinnerung, Euphorie, Verlust und Körperlichkeit. Overmono stehen für Druck, Rhythmus, Hingabe. Sie platzieren sich als nahbarer Gegenentwurf zu algorithmisch geprägter Austauschbarkeit. Overmono sind roh, präzise, menschlich und absolut zeitlos. Sie sind nicht die Zukunft elektronischer Musik, sondern der Moment, in dem sie gerade neu erfunden wird.

Overmono were on a roll before lockdown. As the top YouTube comment for their Joy Orbison collaboration track ‘Bromley’ put it, “so this is the track that was on every 5 minutes at Warehouse Project. ”That track and the duo’s own ‘Le Tigre’ were played out constantly by the likes of Four Tet and Ben UFO, the former also hiring the duo to remix his track ‘Teenage Birdsong’. Then there are their edits. Thom Yorke was so impressed by the duo’s versions of ‘Not The News’that he let them release the tracks on their own Polykicks label. Add to that their cheeky version of Rosalia –‘A Palé’,which caught the ear and the eye of the respected flamenco artist, as well as being a highlight of their live performances pre-lockdown. Then the world abruptly stopped, all their forthcoming gigs were cancelled and suddenly Overmono were able to fully commit their energy to their legendary Bromley studio. Through both time in the studio and time on the road, Jamie Roberts has dedicated the last decade to developing his alias, Blawan – and in the process, he’s created a universe within techno that’s all his own. Roberts grew up in Barnsley, UK and from an early age was etching out his musical path as a drummer – a relic of the past which should come as no surprise to anyone familiar with his productions. Indeed, his discography as Blawan illuminates a natural fluency for rhythm, whether straight, stridently syncopated, or swinging somewhere in between. His other aliases, Kilner and Bored Young Adults, like his collaborations with Pariah as Karenn and with Surgeon as Trade, have provided additional bandwidth for experimentation. Having released across the board of rippling jet-black minimalism, jubilant two-step vocal cuts, and savant grooving techno, the labels Roberts has worked with are appropriately varied: Hessle Audio, R&S, Clone’s Basement Series, Hinge Finger, and Black Sun as Blawan, plus The Trilogy Tapes and Avian under his other solo names. Roberts’ own label, TERNESC, was established in 2015 and has served as the home for his last five releases as Blawan. Having made the move to Berlin in 2015, his analogue-driven studio production and formidable live sets have propelled Roberts into exciting new directions, even as he maintains expert command of more traditional dance floor environments from behind the decks. His latest offering, the full-length Wet Will Always Dry, dropped in June 2018.
