Who they are
“His music offers a rare fusion of populist intensities and nuanced musicality.”
their own biography
the whole biography
His music offers a rare fusion of populist intensities and nuanced musicality. With a keen understanding for the needs of the dance floor and the universal laws of house and techno, he's thrown out the rule book time and time again, sneaking tricks learned from electro and even drum'n'bass into the clubs, and loading up his B-sides with tracks that do what they damned well please. (No kick drum? No problem.) His standards for sound and presentation are exacting. Both on stage and in the studio, Jonson's fealty to analog equipment and real-time playing; as opposed to mere layback-serves as a standard bearer for a kind of electronic music that goes way beyond the drag 'n' drop world of digital composition. Jonson has always been eager to get his hands dirty, and the music reflects that in gnarled bass sequences and long, intuitive lines. His sounds have serious teeth. Despite his quick ascent through the ranks of the techno elite, Jonson hasn't just stayed personally grounded. He's devoted much of his energy to supporting his own close musical family, in the groups Cobblestone Jazz, Midnight Operator and the Modern Deep Left Quartet, and with his Wagon Repair label. He studied classical piano as a kid, plus jazz drumming, and played drums in a marching band – thus laying both the melodic and the rhythmic cornerstones of his music today. Thanks to his father's work as a musician, he also got his hands on synthesizers at the age of 9. By the time he discovered hip-hop as a young teen, he was recreating its electro-based beats on his own rudimentary setup at home. Jonson gradually began honing in on his own sound, both in his productions and his DJ sets, inspired by a deeper, weirder sound that had begun filtering into the Victoria's techno parties. His first record, in 2001, was the first release on Itiswhatitis (a label Mathew bought from its original owner 11 years later). Another followed in 2002, and in 2003. That year, he also made his first appearance on Perlon, 'Alpine Rocket' – a track he recorded alongside Luciano during his first trip to Europe. And then, suddenly, Jonson was everywhere: Sub Static, Arbutus, Kompakt, M_nus – and every track an anthem. "I had all that music kind of saved up," says Jonson, "and then, just by chance, released it all at the same time. People criticized me for it, said that it wasn't a good idea. But it worked out for me. All the tracks did well. I wasn't saturating the market with bad music." He's right there. In 2005, Jonson co-founded Wagon Repair, and it's been a blur since, a nonstop series of tours and recordings, solo and with his band mates. Crucially, he moved to Berlin. His studio here is jaw-dropping, frankly: a semi-circle full of gear, from old workhorses like the 808 and 909 and SH-101 to unique beasts like their Cwejman and Roland System 100m modular system. Tate's Rhodes piano anchors one corner of the horseshoe, and everything feeds into a massive desk where tracks are mixed and recorded in real-time. His two hands have come up with some remarkable material. Having perfected his brand of earthshaking epic with tracks like 'Marionette' and ‘Decompression’, Jonson has increasingly turned his efforts towards more personal, introspective music. He never left the clubs behind though; his 2010 album, Agents of Time, featured a number of tracks that are as hip-winding wily as anything he's produced yet, full-on tracks like 'Girls Got Rhythm' and 'Thieves in Digital Land'. Equally physical was his 2011 drop on Hawtin's M_nus, 'Learning To Fly', and the well-received 'Automaton' on Crosstown Rebels. His 2013 album, On Her Blurry Pictures, too; here Jonson took advantage of the long player format to stretch out and indulge darker moods and slower tempos, but the core of the record remained rooted in a dancefloor context. In 2015, Mathew fulfilled his long-standing ambition of contributing to Fabric's esteemed mix series. Fabric84 is a recording of his set at the club's 15th birthday, during which he played a number of his classic tracks and unreleased edits. The energy of the occasion and the particular way Mathew performs his material blend perfectly, capturing a singular and very special set on CD. As well as continuing to tour his in-demand solo live show, which is consistently ranked amongst Resident Advisor's top 20, Mathew has recently remixed Paul St. Hilaire + Rhauder, The Martinez Brothers, Seth Troxler, and VCMG (to add to his past work including Moby, Cybotron, The Chemical Brothers, and Nelly Furtado). He released an album with Units and Measurements in 2016, and another as his new alias Freedom Engine entitled “A Box Full Of Magic” in 2019. Eighteen years on from his debut release, 'New Identity', Mathew's sound and reputation as an artist have developed, as you would expect for someone so richly and widely talented.Their RA profile lists Global Underground, Ministry Of Sound, fabric Records, Mute Records and 6 more.Recently at Club der Visionaere, Sonnenraum, Berghain · often with PARAMIDA, J. Looking beyond the realm of 4/4 techno to explore left-field sound design and rhythmic complexity, the Berghain resident’s string of signature solo releases for the club’s Ostgut Ton imprint and Smalltown Supersound have explored the rhythmic functionality of pumping, twisting and constantly evolving modular electronics. These popular releases and live performances have earned Barker widespread acclaim from the underground to the mainstream and everything in-between, both off and on the dancefloor. After an intense, fruitful period of experimentation and conceptual development, Barker released his solo debut EP Debiasing on Ostgut Ton in 2018, containing four hypnotic and kick-less dancefloor experiments based on research into behaviorism and cognitive bias. This was followed by his solo debut album Utility, a playful but intentional musical approach to translating a spectrum of transhumanist ideas, packed into a deeper exploration of the emotive potential of rhythmic ambient electronics and – once again – almost entirely without kick drums. Both releases were received by many as instant classics, helping to define a discrete category of ambient dance music. Utility made numerous Best of 2019 year’s end lists, including Pitchfork, The Quietus, DJ Mag, Resident Advisor and others. It also earned the title of Mixmag’s Album of The Year 2019. As Philip Sherburne wrote in his Pitchfork review: “For anyone who has ever fantasized about dissolving into the dancefloor, Utility is about as close as it gets.” These releases were followed by two limited-edition white label EPs for Ostgut, BARKER001 and BARKER002. In 2023, he released the Unfixed EP on Smalltown Supersound, followed by another limited-edition white label 12" on the label in 2025, Cosmic Microwave / Stochastic Dynamics In Non-Linear Systems. In April 2025, Barker released his second full-length Stochastic Drift. Inspired in part by Euclidean and probabilistic patterns as well as the chaos and uncertainty of the preceding years, it emerged from a place of vulnerability that announced itself in the music's emotional impact. Boomkat celebrated the album as unfolding "like a galaxy-brained afters playlist…Barker's relentless research and development makes his music as fluid and mutable as his palette." In their Best New Music review, Pitchfork's Harry Tafoya described it as "his most dazzling and definitive statement to date." Stochastic Drift was also named Mojo Magazine's #1 Electronic Album of 2025. Whether performing live solo or as part of a group, DJing on his own or B2B, Barker combines bass music, techno, electro, breakbeat, dub and ambient elements that coalesce into a distinctive, future-facing vision. He is one-half of Barker & Baumecker with longtime Panorama Bar resident nd_baumecker, with whom he has released multiple EPs, two albums and dozens of remixes. And his expansive approach to unorthodox musical exploration has led to ongoing live collaborations with the likes of Norwegian saxophonist Bendik Giske, alongside Speedy J, Rødhåd and Sebastian Mullaert in the shapeshifting live improv outfits Stoor, WSNWG and Circle of Live, installations developed with creative computer programmer Kay Sievers / Versio Duo, and remixes for the likes of Martin Gore, Tangerine Dream, JakoJako, and Planetary Assault Systems. It's a perspective also reflected in his curation of the Leisure System label and Berghain club night of the same name, which held the longest residency in Berghain's history. Launched in 2008, with the label following in 2009, Leisure System has since released seminal works by the likes of Dopplereffekt, Objekt, JakoJako, and Visionist, among many others. In addition to his recorded music, live sets, and DJing, Barker is an active instrument designer who combines coding skills with analogue, electric and acoustic instrument construction for his experimental archive and platform Voltek Labs. In the summer of 2020, he contributed a large-scale sound installation, Piano-1, to Berghain’s Studio Berlin art exhibition, featuring a self-playing piano performing generative serial compositions named Attune, which emphasize democratic harmonic relationships between tones. He has also delved deep into constructing his own MIDI-triggered acoustic instruments, including a prepared plate reverb and various percussion instruments, notably used to explore the resonant architecture of Detroit’s empty, abandoned factories with Underground Resistance’s Ray7. In August 2024, Barker collaborated with Kay Sievers / Versio Duo on the Discrete Ensemble installation, at the Neuenationalgalerie in Berlin, built around a set of eight MIDI-controlled mechanical string instruments called Viola-1. In September 2025, he performed alongside Norwegian saxophonist Bendik Giske for Atonal Festival in Berlin, with further live and studio collaborations for the pair on the horizon. Barker’s musical focus continues to be on the peak-time dancefloor potential of ambient music as he works on another album and label. Operating on the periphery of club music, he continues to shift its centre.Their RA profile lists Ostgut Ton, Smalltown Supersound, Leisure System, Air Texture and 2 more.Recently at Berghain, Dark Matter Berlin · often with Steffi, AMORAL, BLANKA, none of them here that night

Wise portrays a deep sense of knowledge and maturity, devising atmospheric soundscapes with a raw but modern touch, captivating the listener from beginning to end. His sets demonstrate this to full effect, consistently maintaining a powerful sonic trademark via a low end focused, yet intricate and enchanting selection. Indeed, the capacity to dip in between deeper realms of sound and rhythmic exploration aids the artists preference towards longer sets. Before discovering the world of electronic music, Wise came from a background of drum and percussion which was guided by his Iranian father, a former professional drummer. This influence plays a key part in shaping the foundation of techno that he crafts. Subsequently, exposure to Europe’s dancefloors further triggered his passion, allowing him to understand the importance of the interaction between the physicality of sound on the human body. Fast-forward to 2024, this notion gave birth to his label ‘Moving Pressure’. Conceptually, as the title already hints at, the imprint focuses on the capacity of sound to guide movement and emotion, to weave into the fabric of our physical being. Concretely, the first release features a 4 tracker by Wise himself and will proceed by showcasing his sonic vision through self and external releases. The artist’s 'quality over quantity’ mindset has seen him become a mainstay on influential labels such as Mote Evolver and his pure but passionate approach to music has given him the honour of gracing institutions such as Berghain and Bassiani and earned him a residency at the esteemed underground Eerste Communie parties hailing from The Netherlands. Ryan Elliott has spent the past two decades of his esteemed career effortlessly bridging the gap between different artistic expectations. Growing up as a DJ in Detroit, but coming into his own in Berlin, his sets expand on each city’s styles. A resident at Berghain and Panorama Bar, he refuses to be aligned with just techno or house, instead highlighting their optimal overlaps. And as a producer, remixer, and founder of his own label, Faith Beat, Elliott releases music that is playable but unpredictable, perfectly calibrated for dancefloor impact and enduring enjoyment. No matter what form his musical expression takes, with Elliott listeners always seem to get the best of both worlds. Launched in 2019, Faith Beat is an organic extension of Elliott’s passions as a DJ, producer and voracious record collector. A home for music that is thoughtful and loose, precise yet approachable, Faith Beat is not a one-way street, but an ongoing conversation between Elliott and the crowds he plays for, the producers he loves and the records he buys. As a DJ, Elliott delivers sets that slice energetically across the house and techno divide, a revelatory approach that's infused with a deep respect for his selections. This ethos also manifests in the monthly charts Elliott has published since 2003, insisting on giving a proper platform to whatever he plays. As with all of his efforts, Elliott doesn’t pit one place or style against each other, continuing to pursue a sleek and transportive fusion.Their RA profile lists Ostgut Ton and Faith Beat.Last at Berghain in May · often with DVS1, BLANKA, Natalie Robinson, none of them here that night

As a teenager, he connected with the world of dance music via scuffed tech-house records in dollar bins and a DVD rip of Paris Is Burning. Drawing on these inspirations, his early productions hit a sweet spot between wide-eyed weirdness and club-ready maximalism. He was quickly released on Feel My Bicep and Cold Tonic, and began an upward trajectory from the Taieri Plains to clubs and stages worldwide. Now trading under his own name, Eden’s vividly colourful productions have been recently released via Sensible Seelen, Optimo Music, and Beats In Space. In recent years, Eden has also linked up with Public Possession, a crew of Munich upstarts who are actually able to keep up with his relentless and diverse discography. This includes the first edition of the Big Beat Manifesto series, which has gained support from Discogs sharks, Solomun, Jennifer Cardini, Jamie Tiller, Huge DJ Party Alerts, Gerd Janson and more. Much like his productions, Eden’s DJ sets are reverent and wildly fun, the product of an innately curious talent. Whether in the booth at Rinse FM or NTS, or in front of crowds in London, Dunedin, or Japan, Eden has a habit of weaving sets that are rich and unpredictable, interspersing phases of driving momentum with joyful curveballs and blissful reveries — moments that feel like turning the corner on a precipice and suddenly seeing ocean.Their RA profile lists Permanent Vacation, Beats in Space Records, Optimo Music, Public Possession and 1 more.“With over two decades of electronic music eminence, Eli Escobar has confirmed his place amongst dance music greats.”

the whole biography
Initially it felt fairly easy to pin down the Man Power project when it started off in 2014 with a bunch of growling slo mo techno records on the likes of Correspondant, Hivern Discs and Infiné. However in the intervening decade we’ve seen Geoff Kirkwood continually confound expectations, whether it be via releasing Disco and Italo records (Stamp / SKINT / Eskimo), Detroit leaning Techno (Sound As, DFA, Ene Japan), straight-up House Music (Rekids, Make A Dance, ESP Institute) or, more often than not, weirdo mutations of all of those sounds and more on an impressively wide range of big and small labels. All of this before we even get into his Techno Alias MPX, his 2 Experimental Ambient albums as Bedwetter, and his creation of a full blown Orchestral Symphony with the Royal Northern Sinfonia. Since almost the very start of the project, Man Power has been found applying this mercurial method regularly as a DJ at clubs and festivals across the world ranging from the candy coloured excesses of Burning Man Festival, to the lights-off mystery of Panorama Bar, and all points in-between. Making appearances at everything from institutions like Glastonbury, Rex Club Paris, Love International, Nitsa Barcelona, Vent Tokyo, Amnesia Ibiza and Elsewhere Brooklyn, to nameless warehouses, pub-raves, pop-ups and guerrilla parties across the UK, Europe, Central & South East Asia, The USA and Latin America. In many ways it feels as though it’s taken the last 10 years just for Kirkwood to be able to get some way towards revealing the full scope of his musical breadth both as a producer and as a DJ, but despite the somewhat open-ended approach to genre it’s still possible to pick out common threads in his choices. Throughout the Man Power project there has always been an openly earnest and emotive undercurrent that is often tempered by a contrary tendency towards the arch or absurd, and while cinematic sonics and narrative indulgences are frequent motifs, they often rub shoulders with a raw, direct and unpretentious approach that arguably borders on the naïve. At the heart of it all, whether making music, playing music, releasing other people’s music via his Me Me Me label, or throwing parties around the world, the Man Power project is simply an example of someone authentically trying to explore the full extent of their creative self, and doing so in way that may not be for everyone, but which is deeply meaningful and compelling to those who feel things the same way that he does.Their RA profile lists Eskimo Recordings, BMG, PIAS, InFine Music and 6 more.“Mayurashka is a DJ and electronic music producer based in Tokyo, Japan.”
