Listening Session: Zahra - A Selection of Music from Libyan Tapes (Habibi Funk 031)
Join us for an intimate listening session with Zahra, as she takes us behind one of her first contribution to the label compilation: A Selection of Music from Libyan Tapes (Habibi Funk 031).
This compilation marks the first record Zahra contributed to in a major way at Habibi Funk. Over the course of the project, she interviewed all fourteen featured artists or, where they had passed away, members of their families to document the stories behind the music and preserve a chapter of Libya’s musical heritage.
The research culminated in a 32-page booklet that accompanies the release, bringing together personal histories, memories, and cultural context while tracing the country’s rich musical landscape and the Afro-influences that have shaped Libyan identity and sound.
During the session, Zahra will guide us through stories, discoveries, and challenges behind the project. Spanning a remarkable range of genres and styles, the album offers a unique window into a musical tradition that has remained largely unheard outside Libya.
More than a listening session, this is a conversation about archiving, oral history, cultural preservation, and the people behind the records.

their own biography
the whole biography
I come from a background in cultural management, working across theatre production and art curation, and for the past two years I’ve been working in music as Product Manager at Habibi Funk Records. Having spent much of my life moving between countries and learning languages, my musical horizons have always been shaped by sounds from the different places that have shaped me. Depending on the night, the vinyls I play move between traditional and obscure sounds from SWANA and Africa, or into salsa, cumbia rebajada, drum and bass, and electronic selections from across the world.Last at 90mil in Jul · often with BLTNM, Fawzi, GRAND FINALE 10th Oct, none of them here that night
