Matriark

One listing in New York, over the last three years · Norway

also plays Berlin — 4 nights

The product of years spent nurturing a subterranean disposition, Matriark's is an approach rooted in Northern European foundations and evolved through an expansive curiosity. Part of Copenhagen's BunkerBauer collective, resident of Den Anden Side and Drift Kyiv, and one-half of PLAZA alongside DJ IBON, it is a collaborative nexus from which she emerges.

If spellcasting can be seen as a mode of djing which dissolves barriers between sound, space, and system, then it is an approach here firmly ascribed. Drawn somewhere between intimacy and intensity, weaving hallucinatory zones through warped low-frequency techno and trance, stripped back millennial psy and post-tekno, and the heady, rhythmic play of tweaked-out strands of minimal. A method as twitchy and pacey as it can be heads-down and intimate, invoking a kind of collective bodily and cognitive immersion.

Through the dust of Albanian free parties and Australian doofs, to the futurist enclaves of the Netherlands and the boreal rapture of Scandinavia’s vast forests, sounds a method evolved across diverse spaces and scenes. Key releases on ‘Blue Hour’ and ‘Magdalena’s Apathy’, as well as standout mixes for 'No Borders' and 'examine-archive', are each testament to an artist whose expertise and appeal stretches far beyond its Scandinavian roots.

A driven, forward-thinking, and functionally emotive form of sonic expression. To invoke introspection, just as much as it pushes physical reaction. So the swirl beckons.
