“Maria “Ri Ri” Garcia, known worldwide as Rimarkable, is not just a DJ, producer, and vocalist.”
their own biography
the whole biography
Maria “Ri Ri” Garcia, known worldwide as Rimarkable, is not just a DJ, producer, and vocalist. She is a cultural architect, an Afro-Puerto Rican powerhouse who has been shaping the sound and spirit of dance music for more than two decades. Brought up in Detroit, sharpened during childhood summers in Chicago, and thriving in New York City, Rimarkable embodies the full spectrum of the Black diasporic tradition—gospel, funk, soul, jazz, house, and techno, all transformed into electrifying soundscapes that ignite dance floors across the globe. Her story begins in the sanctified heat of a Pentecostal church, where her mother, a classically trained pianist and music minister, saturated her childhood with gospel harmonies and discipline. Summers in Chicago exposed her to the earliest pulse of house music, embedding in her DNA a rhythm that would later define her life. By 1997 she was on the decks, and by 2006, frustrated with the industry’s barriers and biases, she became her own producer, turning resistance into innovation and claiming complete autonomy over her craft. Since then, Rimarkable has built a singular career that bridges worlds. She has shared stages with legends including George Clinton, Madonna, Erykah Badu, Louie Vega, Honey Dijon, Roger Sanchez, Pete Tong, and Francois K, while simultaneously cultivating underground spaces that honor community, authenticity, and radical joy. Her long-running events in Detroit, New York, and San Francisco have become touchstones for dancers and DJs alike, curating nights that are as spiritual as they are explosive. In 2021 she joined the storied Defected Records family, cementing her place among global house music royalty. As a host of the weekly Defected Radio Show, she now reaches millions of listeners across more than 170 FM stations worldwide, bringing her distinctive voice and impeccable taste to an international audience. Beyond the booth, Rimarkable is a celebrated educator and thought leader. She serves as an Adjunct Professor at NYU’s Clive Davis Institute, and instructor at Waajeed’s Underground Music Academy, where she teaches her groundbreaking course series, “The Alchemy of DJing.” This work frames DJing as both art and ritual, blending technique, history, spirituality, and cultural analysis into a visionary curriculum, with raw truth and resources for navigating the scene as a business. She has presented versions of this lecture and workshop in Nairobi, Berlin, Yale, and the Queens Museum, underscoring her mission to expand dance music’s role as a vehicle for healing, liberation, and collective power. Rimarkable’s artistry is rooted in more than beats. It is about presence, justice, and transformation. Whether unleashing a thunderous techno set, layering vocals over soulful house grooves, or leading students through the metaphysics of rhythm, she approaches every arena with the same intent: to elevate. To remind us that music is ceremony. To preserve the roots of dance music while pushing it fearlessly forward. With releases on labels including Classic Music Company, Big Love, Club Bad, and her forthcoming imprint Betty Jean’s Dream, Rimarkable continues to expand her sonic universe. Each project is a testament to her philosophy that excellence, dignity, and artistry are not optional but essential. Detroit is her foundation, New York is her canvas, and the world is her stage. To experience Rimarkable is to step into a revolution of rhythm, where every beat is an invitation, every set is a sermon, and every dance floor becomes a sanctuary. This is more than music. This is Rimarkable.Deep House on 1, Tech House on 1 and House on 1. styles on their catalogued releasesReleased on Catharsis (1) and Raisani Records (1); their RA profile also lists Defected Records, Planet E, Nervous Records, Liberate and 6 more. labels on their catalogued releases and on their RA profileRecently at Elsewhere, Circle Line Cruises, H0L0 · often with Todd Edwards, Griffin Maxwell Brooks, Ksenyeah, none of them here that night
“JKriv is a Brooklyn-based producer, DJ, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and label owner.”
their own biography
the whole biography
JKriv is a Brooklyn-based producer, DJ, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and label owner. With a professional musical career stretching nearly 2 decades, J has gained serious attention recently for his original productions and inspired DJ sets, and was called “an innovator of the scene” by Defected Records boss Simon Dunmore. It’s a title he has rightly earned, with releases and remixes on Joey Negro’s Z Records, Soundway Records, his own label Razor-N-Tape, among many others, plus massive new singles and remixes for Glitterbox. J brings a seasoned musicality to everything he touches, whether original productions, remixes or reworks and re-edits. A trained musician, his talent for dazzling live instrumentation is evident in original disco productions like his recent Traxsource #1 Soul/ Funk/Disco track Not That Serious (Big Love), Vertigo (Z Records) and Yo Love (Glitterbox). As a studio musician he has recorded bass, guitar, and/or written string & horn arrangements for Dimitri From Paris, Horse Meat Disco feat. Kathy Sledge, and as the producer of the sprawling Studio 54 Music: Night Magic Vol. 1 project, J reimagined disco classics with brand-new all-live studio recordings, translated through his modern club approach, garnering nearly 1.5 million plays for the lead single Souvenirs. J has a slew of new music forthcoming later this year and into 2022, including a release Dam Swindle’s Heist Recordings, Razor-N-Tape, and Glitterbox. A purveyor of all things outer-national, JKriv has nurtured a long-standing love affair with the music of Brazil which he realized through his 2017 Férias ’77 LP compilation of reworks on Razor-N- Tape, his 2019 Aguaxirê EP on Detroit’s Rocksteady Disco, and multiple releases on Brazilian Mareh Festival’s label Barefoot Beats. He has remixed African artists for renowned labels Soundway and Africa Seven, and 80s French pop for label Pardonnez-Nous, and both classic and current Afro/Latin sounds for Razor-N-Tape. His music has garnered support from all quarters of club and radio DJs, such as Derrick Carter, Disclosure, Andrew Weatherall, Louie Vega, Kenny Dope, Mark Farina, BBC Radio 1’s Pete Tong and BB6’s Craig Charles, among many others. Like his productions, JKriv’s DJ sets showcase his deep and diverse taste, weaving eclectic disco, house, and offbeat selections together seamlessly, always with an ear for groove and harmony, and an eye to the dance floor. As a founding member and resident DJ of Hot Honey Sundays, JKriv helped lead the most buzz-worthy new party of Brooklyn’s incredible comeback summer of 2021, growing a 2000+ devoted weekly following of dancers and a formidable social media presence. J has performed live and DJ’d in over 30 countries and in nearly every state in the continental US, sharing bills with Todd Terje, Tony Humphries, Dimitri From Paris, Joey Negro, and made his smashing debut at the Defected Croatia festival this past summer. A foundational member of the live disco band Escort, J has co-written/produced songs, and toured as bassist/guitarist with the group at Coachella, Sasquatch Festival, Electric Forest and innumerable club gigs around the world, as well as a original founding member and former bass player for the groundbreaking live-house group Tortured Soul. JKriv’s talents as a tastemaker extend beyond the studio and DJ booth, as co-owner of respected Brooklyn record label Razor-N-Tape. RNT now boasts a nearly 100-release-deep catalog that has garnered support and spins from some of the biggest names in modern club and radio, and is one of the most respected and consistent current independent dance music labels.Disco on 67, House on 52, Nu-Disco on 27 and Deep House on 23. styles on their catalogued releasesReleased on Bedits (1), Favorite Recordings (1) and Lumberjacks In Hell (1); their RA profile also lists Z Records, Disco Deviance, Discovery Recordings, Razor-N-Tape and 6 more. labels on their catalogued releases and on their RA profileRecently at public records, 99 Scott Ave, Black Flamingo · often with Aaron Dae, Disgonuts, Peter Matson, none of them here that night
