“As an artist, Batu continually strikes out on his own.”
their own biography
the whole biography
As an artist, Batu continually strikes out on his own. Rightly hailed for his distinctive slant on modernist techno and experimental club music, he’s also prolific beyond the dancefloor. His is a sound marked out by bold shapes and angular expressions, whether strapped to physical rhythms or not. His 2022 debut album Opal took his accomplished sound design into broader spheres of expression, while production work for FKA Twigs saw him approaching pop sensibilities with his non-conformist sonic palette. As well as his production work, Batu’s presence as a DJ on the international club and festival circuit touches on venerated events such as Glastonbury, Dekmantel Festival, Sonar and Unsound. The flexibility in his sound also translates to the intimacy of smaller underground events - an environment which remains inspiring even as he graces some of the biggest stages for electronic music globally. Beyond sonics, his interests expand into visual work too, having produced and directed the video to his own track ‘Solace’ and collaborated on an A/V composition with Harry Butt for his Crack Magazine cover feature - one of multiple cover features he’s been placed on. Taken alongside his music, Batu’s holistic engagement with electronic music culture adds up to a considered spectrum of output and efforts with a shared aim - to push things forward.Their RA profile lists XL Recordings, Hessle Audio, Livity Sound, Timedance and 1 more.Recently at Sincerely, Ophelia, Good Room, Camp Kennybrook · often with JASSS, KAVARI, Dj Babatr, none of them here that night
“BEIGE by name but definitely not by nature, the DJ’s 2022 set at the beloved Honcho Campout is a perfect example of their singular appeal.”
their own biography
the whole biography
BEIGE by name but definitely not by nature, the DJ’s 2022 set at the beloved Honcho Campout is a perfect example of their singular appeal. A meandering journey through murky house cuts, swaggering funk, dreamy indie dance and unapologetic pop, it also never veers too far into chinstroke territory — Talking Heads, The Pussycat Dolls, Frank Ocean, Tina Turner and Dolly Parton all make unexpected appearances in various guises. “It’s about playing with tension and contrast,” says BEIGE, “bringing in things that the audience are familiar with and seeing how you can subvert them, so maybe you recognize the vocal but it's with arrangements you've never heard before.” Based in Detroit and vinyl-trained, BEIGE specializes in multi-hued, carefully considered and highly danceable sets such as this. Whether they’re playing smooth R&B and downtempo soul, crunchy electro, cheeky disco edits or oddball tech house, the only constant in their sets is quality. They made their club debut proper in Detroit in 2017, immediately grabbing the attention of the cognoscenti with their wide-ranging, on-point selections and silky, inventive transitions. Uninterested in gimmickry or self-promotion, they prefer to let their work speak for itself, collecting a growing number of fans and increasingly impressive bookings along the way. BEIGE grew up moving around the US but their musical journey really began in Melbourne, Australia, where they lived for a year after college in 2013. The Melbourne electronic music scene was thriving and BEIGE was introduced to festival culture and a spectrum of sounds they’d never heard before. They’d attempted to learn a few instruments while growing up but nothing stuck, and while music had always been a passion, expressed through making mix CDs for friends and scouring MySpace for new musical discoveries, they never aspired to a career as a DJ. That happened by accident, when they crossed paths with feminist DJ network Seraphine Collective in their new home of Detroit in 2015. Seraphine was offering sliding-scale vinyl DJing workshops, and BEIGE caught the bug instantly. “We would just go to each other's houses and spend hours round robining with random dollar bin records and it was purely for fun, which I’m grateful for,” they say. “If I ever had a notion in my mind that I was trying to do this professionally or for a particular reason I think it would have poisoned it from the start.” Before long, however, BEIGE graduated from playing friends’ parties to their first real gig at Detroit’s Temple Bar and shortly afterwards, an all-vinyl set at Marble Bar with the late, great Mike Huckaby in February 2018. It was a defining moment that also marked the beginning of BEIGE’s professional career — i.e. being paid to DJ in Detroit two-three times weekly, as well as more regularly in places like New York. They hold down a residency at Brooklyn’s renowned The Lot radio and are regularly booked for the city’s most forward-thinking parties at venues such as Nowadays, Good Room and Mansions. Their biggest boost, however, came via the support of esteemed DJs and producers Eris Drew and Octo Octa, who recognized in BEIGE a special talent. The T4T LUV NRG label owners began booking BEIGE to play parties and a Boiler Room with them, then released BEIGE’s AMEN! Volume 1 mixtape in April 2022. A showstopping devotional party mix covering more than three decades and many variants of house music, it highlighted BEIGE’s technical skill and savvy alongside their impeccable taste. They debuted at Detroit’s Movement Festival that same year and have been on a hot streak ever since, embarking on their first international tour early in 2023 which included stops at Berlin’s Panorama Bar and Amsterdam’s De School. BEIGE returned to Movement Festival as part of a marathon of gigging over Memorial Day weekend in Detroit this year, culminating in a sunrise back to back set with Octo Octa to close the celebrated Return to the Source event for New York institution The Bunker. Other scheduled 2023 highlights include a return to Europe to play Body Movements festival in London and Draaimolen Festival in the Netherlands, and their first appearance at the coveted Sustain Release festival in upstate New York. As likely to play a huge hit as to introduce you to your new favorite track, BEIGE occupies an important niche between their stuffier and less imaginative peers. When the conditions are right, they endeavor to create transcendental dancefloor moments akin to opening a wormhole, “where everybody in the room is collectively participating in this consciousness-melding experience and I'm just the conductor.” Armed with a healthy disrespect for genre and convention and a discerning but unpretentious music collection, BEIGE aims to please, but more commonly thrills, delights, and inspires.Their RA profile lists T4T LUV NRG.Recently at Market Hotel, public records, Paragon · often with SPRKLBB, Josh Steers, tINI, none of them here that night

“His musical catalog covers themes and concepts regarding modern science, genetics, healthcare, technology and their effects on the human condition.”
their own biography
the whole biography
His musical catalog covers themes and concepts regarding modern science, genetics, healthcare, technology and their effects on the human condition. His earliest productions appeared in 1987 as a collaboration with Lou Robinson (of Scan 7) under the group name Nasa with “Time To Party” and “Cant Stop Now”. Stingray’s solo productions appeared later under the Urban Tribe moniker on Carl Craig’s Planet E Communications label (“Covert Action”). 1998’s debut of “The Collapse Of Modern Culture” on James Lavelle’s Mo’Wax label turned Urban Tribe into a collaborative effort, adding Carl Craig, Anthony “Shake” Shakir and Moodymann to the group. His most notable connection, however, is through the iconic electro outfit of James Stinson and Gerald Donald aka Drexciya. As Mystic Tribe A.I., Stingray’s early credit was on Stinson’s (as The Other People Place) “Sunday Night Live at the Laptop Cafe” 12” via Clone Records. Further meetings with the duo earned him the name “Drexciyan DJ Stingray”, subsequently becoming Stinson and Donald’s official touring DJ. Donning his emblematic balaclava, his cyborg-like DJ sets continue to leave audiences captivated globally for decades. This skilled approach to the dancefloor gives him quite the in-demand gig schedule, appearing at landmark festivals and venues like Tresor Berlin, Glastonbury, Dekmantel, Movement Festival (Detroit), Making Time (USA), Sonar Festival (Barcelona), Berghain, Dimensions Festival, and Berlin Atonal. Stingray’s career continued on as DJ Stingray 313 (and as Stingray313, respectively), after Stinson’s passing in 2002 in respect of the Drexciyan legacy. His ever-unique productions have seen releases on Mahogani Music, Warp Records, Rephlex (“Misinformation Campaign” EP), Tresor (Kern, Vol. 4), and Unknown To The Unknown (Imping Is Easy). Collaborative EPs on WéMè Records with Gerald Donald and Penelope Martin were released in 2012 under the enigmatic NRSB-11 moniker. DJ Stingray 313’s music and sets are met with high praise in the media, with constant appearances in DJ Mag, Resident Advisor, Mixmag, The Wire, Pitchfork and Fact Magazine, as well as mixes on BBC radio. His Micron Audio imprint also continues the representation of his futuristic template, embodying his signature sound of electro and techno. Aside from creating Micron as home to release his music – see the inimitable “Electronic Countermeasures” EP – he releases music from emerging artists in accord with his vision including Galaxian, Ctris, Loka and 6SISS. DJ Stingray 313 remains a steadfast figure in his uncompromising sound, craftily setting the soundtrack to the not-too-distant future. – J. “HiTech is putting a modern twist on Detroit’s electrifying ghettotech sound with a mouthful of Hennessy and a double dose of booty-shaking techno.”
their own biography
the whole biography
HiTech is putting a modern twist on Detroit’s electrifying ghettotech sound with a mouthful of Hennessy and a double dose of booty-shaking techno. Since first releasing music in 2022, HiTech has performed across the midwest from venues in Detroit, Chicago, and Cleveland to nightclubs and stadiums in New York City, Atlanta, and Denver, as well as overseas at festivals and venues throughout Europe. Before their eccentric self-titled debut, HiTech organically formed as a group of young creatives who were bound together by their respective roots in Detroit. Beyond the Detroit-based influences that ground the group, an array of earlier influences find themselves rooted within HiTech. 47Chops spent time growing up in both Richmond, Virginia as well as in Cambodia during his early childhood, and he credits his dad— a hairdresser and musical artist who would burn CDs for his hair shows—for an early introduction to cinematic techno, referencing the Matrix soundtrack and Detroit’s popular New Dance Show. King Milo was also exposed to music at an early age at the hands of musical parents—his dad was a full-time rapper-performer-comedian. Milf Melly recalls riding around with his mom and hearing musical influences that spanned rap subgenres from coast to coast, and later credits the video game GTA V for getting him into dance music specifically. Influenced by midwestern dance music icons from the likes of DJ Assault, Moodymann, DJ Rashad, and more, HiTech began to fuse a new sound that transitioned the Detroit-based-ghettotech sound they loved into a modern era. High-technology 808s, illustrious melodies, vibrant synths, and fast paced, pitched up vocals weave together their debut project, HiTech as well as their critically acclaimed follow up, 2023’s DETWAT. With a new album on the horizon for 2024, HiTech are well on their way to reimagining dance and techno culture and cementing a new quintessentially Detroit sound.Their RA profile lists FXHE Records and RAPRAVE.often with Meg10, Yaeji, Headache, none of them here that night

Their sets are palpably personal: The dance floor has always been a powerful platform for expression for Kilo, once as a freeing and connecting space for a quiet house dancer and now as one for moving others like them. When Kilo gets going, you’ll lose sense of the kick drum versus the beat of your own body against the floor. That’s a gift from them to you, and your percussion is a gift back to them. “The South East London-based artist has paved the way in the scene for herself and her sound.”
their own biography
the whole biography
The South East London-based artist has paved the way in the scene for herself and her sound. NIKS has displayed a truly natural and organic growth to her journey, refusing to be genre pigeon-holed and flexing musical knowledge and skill across the board. NIKS has a background in contemporary dance, having danced from the age of four and going on to train professionally for 14 years, but music has always remained front and centre. Having originally found inspiration through a musical stewardship of her guitarist father, as well as in the sounds of electronic music pioneers such as Trevor Rockcliffe, Mr. G, Kerri Chandler and a growing record collection, NIKS looked towards DJing as a natural step in artistic direction. Her heavy pool of vast influences has resulted in a forward-thinking sound that is an amalgamation of UK percussive elements, and the influential 90s/00s groovy, rhythmic sounds that influence her extended journey sets today. Her production prowess steadily cements this, with her first EP ‘Milieu’ inviting listeners to enter the vast sonic world of NIKS. She’s been able to consistently flex and flit between bouncy, bass-heavy production and a distinctive downtempo flair. 2025 promises more releases and a remarkable bound forward in production finesse from NIKS, starting with her self-released standalone charity track ‘Amble Minds’. The single raised funds for Focus Congo, with the dubby roller being reviewed by Resident Advisor as a ‘wonky, disorientating club weapon’. As she’s honed in on her craft, NIKS has played across globally esteemed festivals and venues such as Glastonbury, Panorama Bar, Basement, Blitz, Club RAUM, FOLD, Horst and more. Performances, as well as curations, at De School, Love International, UNFOLD - leading to rubbing shoulders with the likes of Josey Rebelle, Amaliah, Shanti Celeste, Call Super, Tasha, Josh Caffé, rRoxymore and many others - amongst her busiest touring yet. Alongside a thriving and full career and self-taught journey, in 2020, NIKS co-founded the integral collective Black Artist Database. Originally coined as Black Bandcamp, the organisation was created in direct response to a lack of representation in the dance music space. Since its inception, NIKS has been part of a team behind mobilising for inclusion and equality in the scene, co-curating multiple workshops, as well as club and festival takeovers, talks, and masterclasses. The artist also has a regular Rinse FM show, taking listeners on a monthly deep dive through underground house and techno, as well as displaying her wide spectrum of sound through one-off shows such as her downtempo special, a dubby b2b journey with livwutang, and a techno masterclass for Tasha’s Neighbourhood. She also regularly appears on long-time friend Moxie’s NTS show, and has also held down a BBC R1 residency, delving into her music journey so far and the influences behind each stage, with episodes on ‘The Genesis’, Black Artist Database and on forthcoming/new music. Alongside her seminal RA Podcast, she has curated mixes for the likes of Origins, The Ransom Note, Daisychain, CRACK, as well as recently releasing a Dekmantel Podcast - delivering a ‘warm, supple soundscape’ ahead of her debut performance at the renowned festival this year. NIKS has remained truly devoted to the underground scene across her career, showcasing a steady and admirable rise within the space, carving out room for a sound and presence that has become synonymous with futuristic dance music.Their RA profile lists Neighbourhood, Céad, Borne Fruits, Obligated Records and 1 more.Last at public records in Dec 2023 · often with Amaliah, Berghain, Grace Dahl, none of them here that night

the whole biography
Born and raised in west suburban Chicagoland, Shaun J. Wright spent most of their teen years immersed in the sounds of house music. In the late 80’s and early 90’s, house music was a powerful force, permeating the mainstream airwaves of Chicago’s most prominent radio stations. With Wright being raised in the epicenter of house culture during this era, their love for dance music began to expand throughout their high school years as they partook in the underground dance scene now globally known as Juke. While in undergrad at Morehouse College in Atlanta, they developed their skills as a dancer in the vogue ballroom scene and professional dance companies. After acquiring an MA Fashion Curation from the London College of Fashion, Wright enjoyed an active career in fashion in New York City. That is where they met Andrew Butler, founder of Hercules and Love Affair, in 2008, and began a whirlwind collaboration with the ensemble as a vocalist. They spent nearly three years touring with the outfit, performing in major venues & festivals throughout North & South America and Europe. They’re also featured prominently on the ensemble’s lauded sophomore album, “Blue Songs’. Returning to Chicago in 2012 to forge their solo career, Wright began to collaborate with respected DJ and producer Alinka. Promptly after beginning their party Twirl in the spring of 2013, Wright & Alinka released their first EP, Twirl Vol. 1, on the celebrated Classic Music Company led by luminaries Luke Solomon and Derrick Carter. They continued to expand upon the brand in late 2014 with their Twirl Records debut release “Journey Into The Deep” EP which included remixes from Kim Ann Foxman and Stereogamous. The label’s output has received much critical acclaim and has been supported by DJ Mag, XLR8R, Mixmag, BBC Radio 1’s Heidi and Annie Mac, and a plethora of notable DJ’s. Wright continues to collaborate with other sought after producers including Chrissy, Kiki, System Of Survival, Stereogamous Bell Boys, Bobmo, and Nicholas, and has been released on Freerange, BPitch Control, Honey Soundsystem & Cocktail D’Amore, Discovery, Marble, and 4Lux, respectively. Wright steadily exhilarates dance floors internationally as a DJ weaving live vocals throughout their sets in locations as far and varied as: Sydney, Berlin (Panorama Bar), London, Auckland, Stockholm, Barcelona, NYC, Los Angeles and his hometown of Chicago (Smart Bar).House on 53, Deep House on 34, Tech House on 21 and Techno on 7. styles on their catalogued releasesReleased on .FREQLINK (1), Black Artist Database (1) and Leftroom (1); their RA profile also lists Defected Records, Classic, BPitch, Freerange Records and 6 more. labels on their catalogued releases and on their RA profileRecently at Knockdown Center, House of Yes, Elsewhere · often with Mike Servito, cotton, LYDO, none of them here that night
