Who they are
“Some DJs burst upon the scene like a supernova, fading just as quickly.”
their own biography
the whole biography
Some DJs burst upon the scene like a supernova, fading just as quickly. Others take years, even decades, to make their way—but those are the ones who make the most impact, thanks to a lifetime of accumulated musical wisdom. Mike Servito is a prime example of the latter. His career is one that’s defined by a slow and steady rise to upper ranks of the deejaying realm—and along the way, he’s perfected a jacking style that equal parts house, acid and techno, a sound that pays homage to the past while being very much of-the-moment. A Detroit-area native, Servito got his early education by tuning into the Electrifying Mojo and the Wizard (Jeff Mill’s radio moniker). By the early ’90s, Servito was primed to try his hand at the deejaying arts, “I was just kind of cocky about it,” he says. “I knew I could do it.” And he was right—in the DJ hotbed of Detroit, internalizing knowledge gleamed from the likes of Mike Huckaby and Claude Young, he kept working at it until he established himself as a force to be reckoned with in the Motor City circuit, eventually becoming a member in good standing with the inner circle of Ghostly International. But Servito felt the need for a change from the sometimes insular environment of Detroit. By the late ’00s, he was living in NYC with no real game plan in place. As it turned out, he didn’t really need one—he soon fell in with the city’s premier techno party, The Bunker, becoming one of its mainstay residents. Around the same time, he was beginning to make his presence known on a global scale, packing dance floors with gigs around the States and around the world. But it was a hometown festival snub in 2014 that really got things going. Servito had played Movement once before, in 2011. “And between then and 2014,” he recalls, “I had been playing so many Bunker parties, playing so many great gigs and my profile was rising—so I was sure they would book me again.” The invite never came. Instead, he booked himself at every Movement after-party he could, one of which was the annual No Way Back, a legendary throw down hosted by The Bunker New York and Detroit’s Interdimensional Transmissions label. The set, a riotously sweaty bleeps-and-beats affair, was recorded for posterity; unexpectedly but deservedly, it garnered a nod as the year’s No 1 online Mix of the Year on Resident Advisor. That was the spark that set Servito’s career aflame, the push that took him to the top. Since then, he’s cemented his status as one of the most respected spinners around, regularly manning the decks at such hallowed halls as Berlin’s Panorama Bar, London’s XOYO and Tokyo’s Contact, not to mention the world’s best festivals—including, of course Movement. And to this day, his approach to deejaying is refreshingly simple: “I really don’t think about it,” he says, “When I’m playing, I just dive in, and I’m OK.” He’s far more than okay—he’s one of the best around.Techno on 7, Acid on 5, House on 5 and Acid House on 3. styles on their catalogued releasesReleased on The Bunker New York (2) and Interdimensional Transmissions (1); their RA profile also lists Firehouse and Honey Soundsystem. labels on their catalogued releases and on their RA profileRecently at Bossa Nova Civic Club, public records, BASEMENT · often with S4M23, JADALAREIGN, The Carry Nation, none of them here that night

Born and raised in west suburban Chicagoland, Shaun J. Wright spent most of their teen years immersed in the sounds of house music. In the late 80’s and early 90’s, house music was a powerful force, permeating the mainstream airwaves of Chicago’s most prominent radio stations. With Wright being raised in the epicenter of house culture during this era, their love for dance music began to expand throughout their high school years as they partook in the underground dance scene now globally known as Juke. While in undergrad at Morehouse College in Atlanta, they developed their skills as a dancer in the vogue ballroom scene and professional dance companies. After acquiring an MA Fashion Curation from the London College of Fashion, Wright enjoyed an active career in fashion in New York City. That is where they met Andrew Butler, founder of Hercules and Love Affair, in 2008, and began a whirlwind collaboration with the ensemble as a vocalist. They spent nearly three years touring with the outfit, performing in major venues & festivals throughout North & South America and Europe. They’re also featured prominently on the ensemble’s lauded sophomore album, “Blue Songs’. Returning to Chicago in 2012 to forge their solo career, Wright began to collaborate with respected DJ and producer Alinka. Promptly after beginning their party Twirl in the spring of 2013, Wright & Alinka released their first EP, Twirl Vol. 1, on the celebrated Classic Music Company led by luminaries Luke Solomon and Derrick Carter. They continued to expand upon the brand in late 2014 with their Twirl Records debut release “Journey Into The Deep” EP which included remixes from Kim Ann Foxman and Stereogamous. The label’s output has received much critical acclaim and has been supported by DJ Mag, XLR8R, Mixmag, BBC Radio 1’s Heidi and Annie Mac, and a plethora of notable DJ’s. Wright continues to collaborate with other sought after producers including Chrissy, Kiki, System Of Survival, Stereogamous Bell Boys, Bobmo, and Nicholas, and has been released on Freerange, BPitch Control, Honey Soundsystem & Cocktail D’Amore, Discovery, Marble, and 4Lux, respectively. Wright steadily exhilarates dance floors internationally as a DJ weaving live vocals throughout their sets in locations as far and varied as: Sydney, Berlin (Panorama Bar), London, Auckland, Stockholm, Barcelona, NYC, Los Angeles and his hometown of Chicago (Smart Bar).House on 53, Deep House on 34, Tech House on 21 and Techno on 7. styles on their catalogued releasesReleased on .FREQLINK (1), Black Artist Database (1) and Leftroom (1); their RA profile also lists Defected Records, Classic, BPitch, Freerange Records and 6 more. labels on their catalogued releases and on their RA profileRecently at BASEMENT, Rumi, Nowadays · often with cotton, LYDO, Kim Ann Foxman, none of them here that night

Sissies of Mercy is the back-to-back collaboration between longtime best-friends sam & austen. Born out of their love for dancing together, their sound as a duo balances playful nostalgia and raunchy darkness to command a sweaty dancefloor. Weaving together diva-fueled house, sparkly 80's pop, nasty acid, and cheeky electro, Sissies' sets create shared moments of freedom and transcendent joy fueled by love and light.Recently at Trans-Pecos, H0L0, Gabriela · often with Eli Escobar, Volvox, Andi, none of them here that night

Hailing from Boston and emerging from NYC's underground, Fruitbat haunts foggy dancefloors with sounds of flamboyant synth, EBM and hard hitting industrial. He is the organizer of the monthly goth and dark dance night Sissies of Mercy. With his monthly party, his goal is to create a haven for queers, freaks and anyone else who dares to lurk in the shadows. Being an enjoyer of all things campy and 80's, you can expect Fruitbat's sets to be just as silly as they are serious. He is no stranger to having fun. and will absolutely let everyone else in the crowd know that they can too. Fruitbat's sets takes dancers on a trip through eccentric synthpop to the darkest of wave, industrial and dark dungeon sounds. Through this trip, one can find themself going from singing along to goth classics, sandwiched between moshing and thrashing to hard, dark dance delicacies. Fruitbat hopes to continue making spaces where trans people can be their true authentic selves on the dancefloor. Especially since the world is limiting trans people's rights more and more every day.Recently at Trans-Pecos, Bossa Nova Civic Club, SILO · often with Alison Wonderland, Alex Unger, Biggly, none of them here that night
