"This is a person who's done so much for the American and global grassroots dance movement ... thing is it doesn't stop in this curatorial generosity, because Boo Lean is also the sickest of DJs, naturally vibing between sonic schools to a mesmerizing result." -- Naive Boo Lean (Lauren Goshinski) is a DJ and curator who’s crafted some of the most forward-thinking dancefloors and AV shows over the past decade. A trusted ear in more ways than one, she’s known behind the scenes as a founder and curator of festivals and spaces like VIA Festival, New Forms Festival, Hot Mass and her current residencies at Public Records and The Lot Radio. She’s also a board member of Resident Advisor, holding it down for independent scenes in a big way. In the booth she’s eclectic and elastic — playing with genre, tempo, pressure and pace to a mesmerizing result. Carving out murky chambers of hyperbaric dub, rollicking mountains of freaky drum play, crystalline pools of vocal hooks and euphoric melody, to all-out bass caverns for your booty, it’s all about riding an edge without falling off for Boo. She helped pioneer a new generation of audio-visual festivals in the US, co-founding the VIA Festival in 2010 in Pittsburgh, PA, and has utilized every opportunity to make viable space for womxn & non-binary promoters and artists across all her projects. As a curator she's facilitated unique collaborations between Oneohtrix Point Never/Nate Boyce, House of Kenzo/Team Rolfes, Pussykrew/Kelela, and supported breakout talent both in their early days and now: Yaeji, Juliana Huxtable, Aurora Halal, and Lotic to Giant Swan, Laurel Halo, NAAFI, Mike Q, Cakes da Killa, Junglepussy, Empress Of, Light Asylum, Nene H, Lafawndah, Jimmy Edgar, Jessy Lanza, Abdu Ali, Purple Tape Pedigree… the list is 1,000+ deep and keeps growing. Like any good rave mom, she curates programs that can thoughtfully link new voices with their predecessors like ESG, Tommy Wright III, Betty Davis, MC Lyte, Rakim, Richard Devine, Moodymann, Underground Resistance, Teklife DJs and more … encourage us to create new worlds together.

    their own biography

    the whole biography
From Paris and Berlin to Lisbon, Marrakech and Indonesia - Christian has paved his way around the world into the ranks of selectors ushering in the electronic renaissance you see here before you. With backgrounds in fashion, fine & culinary arts - Tokyo’s idea of a dance floor could be compared to a painting or a well plated dish. His sound is comprised of deep emotion & strategic choices ranging from velvety House to magnetic Techno, warped Breaks and all in between the spectrum of dance music. Christian Tokyo has graced all but a few clubs here in New York - from Bronx house parties to the edge of Ridgewood. Now retiring a 3 year long run of weekly parties at NYC’s cherished bar - Home Sweet Home; Tokyo moves on to focus his time and energy on playing in more countries, building a namesake party in NYC and releasing forthcoming independent projects of his own. Having already been featured on video & radio platforms (NTS, Rinse, Lot Radio etc.) and already performing alongside newer artists and classic NYC legends like the Bronx’s world renowned duo the Martinez Brothers and James Blake (to name a few) Tokyo continues to step forward as a premier selector in a new wave of DJs firmly taking up sonic arms to represent their hometowns. Being raised out of a musical household with mentors from iconic underground New York City parties and establishments from young (The Loft & Limelight) solidified Christian's interest and dedication to his role in continuing the history of dance music. Expanding community around dance music and holding space for new and older members is Tokyo’s ultimate goal and if you’ve been fortunate enough to make his acquaintance at least just once - one would fully understand. Head to his bandcamp and soundcloud and experience the sound at the links above!

“For me, deejaying is curation, first and foremost.”

    their own biography

    the whole biography
For me, deejaying is curation, first and foremost. Designing a path along an arc of ideas and feelings through sound is what it’s all about. The experience can be in a large space, a small space, a virtual space, or an imaginary space. There’s an inherent and implicit trust involved; whoever is playing the role of DJ at that particular time will help you experience something that you wouldn’t be able to feel in any other place. I like to curate in the realms of house, disco, funk, 70s/80s everything, techno, electronic various, jazz, hip-hop, R&B, indie whatchamacallits, 90s easy pop/rock and alternative, reggae, rai, 50s/60s oldies, classic rock, everything in between and the list goes on. When I make mixes, I’m usually not just putting tracks together, but rather wrapping around an idea. Inspiration can come from anywhere, often from songs themselves. Taking those songs and arranging them in a way that makes me feel a certain way is usually the goal. Sometimes it starts with the name of the mix and goes backwards. The name might give you a clue what it’s about for me, but I won’t always tell you straight away. Your own set of connections and individual interpretation is important to me. I like the ambiguity. But we can have a dialogue about it - let’s do that. When I play out, I think about the space and who I expect to be there, and why they’re there. And what’s going on in the world around us that we can join into. What would we all really benefit from hearing and feeling and doing right now? The connection and shared experience you get with in-person events can’t really be replicated in my view. Not yet, at least. I’ve been curating music since I was maybe 8 or 9, and deejaying since I was 18. Being a DJ has been different things at different times for me. I like where it’s at right now, and I’m excited for where it might be for me in the future. Here with you, Lani @djlaniishere

    their own biography

    the whole biography
Between his own DJing and his work behind Sorry Records, Nick Boyd has become something of a staple of the New York’s club circuit. Behind the boards, he pairs old-school house and techno sounds with a more new-school kitchen-sink mentality. He plays with reverence but without idolatry, paying homage to his favorite scenes without tying himself to them. A hopeless devotee and passionate fixture of the New York City rave underground, Nick is the founder of beloved Brooklyn based DIY label Sorry Records which has been putting out records from a wide variety of stand out folks from the American dance music underground for over in half a decade now. Nick is a long time resident on both The Lot Radio and 8 Ball Radio and has contributed mixes to Honcho Podcast, Rinse FM, and Spontaneous Affinity. He currently runs a monthly Sorry Records residency at Brooklyn techno institution Bossa Nova Civic Club and has played everywhere from Nowadays to North Carolina’s Slingshot Festival, Good Room to beloved Pittsburgh queer rave Jellyfish, FOURTH WORLD to long running Boston-based house music institution Social Studies, as well as made multiple appearances at The Carry Nation’s legendary residency party in NYC. Nick also occasionally writes about music and interviews artists for Love Injection, Crack Magazine, The Fader, and Bolting Bits. ---------------------------------------- Clubs: Nowadays, Bossa Nova Civic Club, ANIMAL, Good Room, Paragon, Mansions, Jupiter Disco, House of Yes, H0L0, Good Life Bar (Boston), The Listening Club (Chicago), Glen Falls House, The Deep End, Good Bar, ... Parties/Festivals: Jellyfish (Pittsburgh), Social Studies (Boston), Slingshot Festival (Durham, NC), Cause & Effect (NYC) Radio: The Lot Radio, Rinse FM, Rinse France, WKCR 89.9FM NY, WNYU 89.1 FM, WKDU Philadelphia 91.7 FM, WERA 96.7FM Arlington, Foundation.fm, Lower Grand Radio, East Village Radio Mix Series: Honcho Podcast, Spontaneous Affinity, XOXA, Good Room, Sweat Equity, Somersault Records, Rave Scout Cookies, Bossa Nova Civic Club/Bossa Radio, ghungru, Never Say Ruin, Fixed Rhythms ---------------------------------------- “Grounded by an encyclopedic knowledge of dance music history and generous sharing of that knowledge, Nick and Sorry Records are beacons of integrity and openness in today's dance music community.” - Lychee, Spontaneous Affinity "Loveable, Hard Working, Absolutely Rowdy Party Starters, Speaker Freaks... yea I dunno, what more can you say about Sorry Records? One of New York's hardest working crews, and a bottomless well of support for the city's scene." - Sweat Equity “As the boss of Sorry Records – one of New York’s finest contempo dance labels – Nick Boyd has been giving multiple leg-ups to a fresh wave of producers like Tony G, C Powers, DJ Wawa and Olive T.” – Chal Ravens, The Face “Over the past five years Sorry Records has been both a bedrock and beneficiary of New York City’s fertile scene.” — Gabriel Szatan, Beatportal "A currently indispensable NYC label" - Piotyr Orlov, Dada Strain “Since its foundation in 2015, Sorry Records has become a critical outpost in New York’s dance-music scene. The label balances an unwavering commitment to the city’s dance music history with a dead-serious approach to having a good time. Their best material seems like it could have come out in the ‘90s, were it not for the of-the-moment production techniques and references in the liner notes.” - Michael McKinney, Passion of the Weiss

Planet B is no stranger to New York dance floors, having held residencies in legendary rooms like House of Yes and Le Bain. Though it has been his “all-nighters” at Eli Escobar’s newly minted Gabriela and the storied Good Room that have pushed him into new light. Planet B’s foundations are house, disco, funk and soul, but very little is off limits. Words can only do so much to describe a Planet B soundtrack, so it’s best you meet him on the floor.
