Who they are
“As Matthew E he fashions club-based, dancefloor slayers.”
their own biography
the whole biography
As Matthew E he fashions club-based, dancefloor slayers. Under that aegis he’s updated the classic Chi-town, jackin’ sound beloved of house aficionados and layered it with fractured funk, belligerent, oddball beats and mechanical soul. If Matthew E is all about the Saturday Night Fever, then, by contrast, Rekid is the slower, more deliberate, rhythmical funk of the mid-week mayhem. Its well-intentioned muscular intensity making it perfect soulful sustenance. Quiet Village is something else all together. A collaboration with long-time musical sparring partner Joel Martin (a vinyl freak, like Mr Edwards, who works in esteemed auction house Christie’s pop department), it’s sample-based music which veers from drawn out disco-not-disco delirium to evocative, under-stated soundscapes. Sea Devils - you keeping up at the back? – is undeniable electronic pop brilliance. Working with Tom from Cagedbaby, it’s the least niche of Matt’s projects and thanks to Sea Devils alluring pop dance grooves they’ll no doubt be shagging the upper reaches of the hit parade sometime soon. Last, but by no means least etc, etc, etc, is Radio Slave. Perhaps Matt’s most instantly recognisable nom de guerre, thanks in part to his inspirational melding of Kylie’s Can’t Get You Out Of My Head to New Order’s Blue Monday, this is Matt’s DJ moniker and the guise under which he completes his incendiary remixes and re-edits. However, before such sonic schizophrenia gets you calling for the men in white coats, just feel the quality and consider Matt’s legacy. Fired by the first wave of acid house, Matt gained his musical spurs by partying to dance music that was just that: music you danced to, irrespective of tribal factions. This was the raison d’être he acknowledged when he took to the decks, first at London’s legendary Milk Bar in 1992, then onto the, then, recently opened Ministry Of Sound and then to parties across the country, most notably in Wales – where he was a regular at free parties – and in Brighton, his home since 1998. His love of re-edits, dance music’s oft-forgotten backbone, led Matt into the studio himself. His own re-edits and remixes, such as the aforementioned epoch-defining re-imagining for Ms Minogue, soon gave way to his own productions and since the floodgates opened there’s been no stopping the man known as, erm, Matthew E, Quiet Village, Sea Devils, Rekid and Radio Slave. He’s released records for Skint, Soul Jazz, Classic, Whatever We Want, and he’s worked with fellow travellers, Belgium’s The Glimmers. If Matt comes up with another two projects he’ll have enough alter egos for every day of the week. Psychologists would probably have a field day with him; mercifully, we don’t have to worry about any crisis of identity, we just get to keep on dancing.Their RA profile lists International DeeJay Gigolo Records, Buzzin Fly, Green, Ostgut Ton and 6 more.often with Berghain, Kameliia, DJ Minx, none of them here that night

Fortunate to grow up around the rich club culture of NYC and influenced by the sounds around him, Avision now finds himself helping to usher in a new wave of techno for the New York scene. His debut album In My Mind has been released on Maceo Plex’s Ellum Audio imprint, which DJ Mag UK has called “an impressive body of work stuffed full of melodic techno and maximal house”. Anthony Cardinale aka Avision started young on the turntables at the age of 12, gained his first residency at 15, and hasn’t looked back since. Recent touring highlights include gigs at The Brooklyn Mirage & Time Warp in NYC, Off Sonar in Barcelona, EDC Las Vegas, Space Miami, Watergate Berlin and Stereo Montreal. Around the same time as his DJ career started, he began to hone his production skills in the studio, and has developed a distinctly New York-flavored techno sound that he’s now bringing to the world. Over the last number of years, he’s had releases on a range of influential labels across the spectrum of techno; from Ellum and Drumcode, to Hardgroove and Truncate to name a few. Avision has also recently started the Ground Rule Collective, an outlet which brings together all of the different aspects of his creative passions: music, events, clothing, art, and food - all driven by New York influence. The events portion of Ground Rule has launched with a recurring series of events in New York at Superior Ingredients (formerly Output), and the first clothing line drop followed shortly after. The philosophy of Ground Rule will mirror the development of Anthony as Avision, “staying true to the music, the art form and myself is something I always want to push forward.”Their RA profile lists Intec Digital, Drumcode, Mindshake Records, Ellum and 6 more.Recently at Hearsay, Artsdistrict Brooklyn · often with Victor Calderone, Kate Simko, Simon Heyliger, none of them here that night

Heavily influenced by innovators such as Throbbing Gristle and Floorplan, their productions encapsulated sounds that were inspired by the UK and Detroit, and were complimented with live spoken word. After moving to Berlin in 2016, they transitioned from performance art to DJing, where their sets on HÖR facilitated their breakthrough as a DJ. Having drawn inspiration from early industrial and techno pioneers, x3butterfly’s sets retain a raw and ominous quality, with a club twist. Prioritizing the eclectic, they often aim to take listeners on a story-telling journey while simultaneously keeping them on the dance floor. Their sets combine jungle, drum and bass, R&B, dubstep, techno, and other world sounds at 140-160 BPM. x3butterfly has played in various clubs in Mexico, Germany, Denmark, Greece, as well as a multitude of cities in the US. They have quickly become a rising NYC star, DJing notorious NYC venues such as Bossa Nova, Mood Ring, and Nowadays.
