  • Marie Davidson

Montreal, Canada · 10 bookings since Dec 2023

“Marie Davidson has always gone against the grain.”

    their own biography

    the whole biography
Marie Davidson has always gone against the grain. The French-Canadian producer’s first four albums established her as a transgressive force in dance music, with her 2014 debut Perte d'identité (Loss of identity) laying the foundations of organic electronics and introspective storytelling that she would continue to build upon. Each release probed her “dualistic” relationship to nightlife while becoming increasingly saturated in its abundance of sounds, from Detroit techno to Italo disco, finally reaching a fever pitch on 2018’s Polaris Music Prize-nominated Working Class Woman. Putting the pitfalls of club culture and her own fractured identity under a withering satirical lens, Working Class Woman doesn’t wrestle with the existential as much as fling it around the dancefloor. After that, 2020’s Renegade Breakdown broke the mould entirely. With “a will to explore other styles of music,” Davidson formed a band with her husband and longtime collaborator Pierre Guerineau (also her counterpart in the duo Essaie Pas) and producer Asaël Robitaille. A deeply collaborative project, the trio wrote a slate of experimental pop songs inspired by records they would play at living-room afterparties – jazz classics, French chanson, electronica – on which Davidson sang for the first time. Four years and a pandemic later, Davidson’s sixth studio album, City of Clowns, marks a return to the club – but not as you know it. The techno thump and scathing spoken-word delivery of Working Class Woman resurface at points, but the pop structures and melodic sensibilities of Renegade Breakdown also remain. It’s a “strange” sonic blend even by Davidson’s own standards. “It’s definitely linking back to what I was doing pre-pandemic, but with a bit of an evolution,” she says. “I didn't want to just repeat myself.” The sound and the spirit of the album are shaped, too, by the fact that Davidson has a new antagonist. This time it’s not club culture that’s coming for her sense of self, it’s Big Tech.

  • Lena Willikens

Cologne, Germany · 13 bookings since Sep 2023

“Lena Willikens doesn’t play the hits.”

    their own biography

    the whole biography
Lena Willikens doesn’t play the hits. When she’s behind the decks, even her biggest fans often have no idea exactly what she’s playing, and that’s part of the magic. Like all DJs, Willikens of course has a passion for records and is always on the hunt for elusive bits of music, but as an artist, her work doesn’t hinge on any one track, or even a handful of tracks. She’s after something bigger, something that’s truly transportive for those on the dancefloor, and the tracks she plays – whether they’re bizarre slices of synth exploration, some ominously churning proto-industrial stomp or something else that simply defies classification – are all parts of a larger, more psychically satisfying whole. Born and raised in Germany, Willikens first honed her unique approach during a long residency at Düsseldorf’s Salon des Amateurs, a much-loved nightspot that has proven to be a hotbed of free-thinking DJ talent. Outside of the club, she also found a platform on Radio Cómeme, where her Sentimental Flashback radio show allowed Willikens to dive deep into all sorts of unusual musical wormholes. (The Cómeme label was also home to her first EP, 2015's Phantom Delia.) These days, however, Willikens' radio adventures happen on NTS, where she pilots the monthly Lightning Conductor program. Now based in Amsterdam, her curatory prowess prompted an invite from Dekmantel to put together the fifth installment of their acclaimed Selectors compilation series, and she also contributed a track to the label’s run of all-star 10th anniversary EPs. As a remixer, she's been tapped in recent years to rework the likes of Lena Platonos, rRoxymore, S U R V I V E, Simian Mobile Disco and Ana Helder, amongst others. And amidst all this activity, she's also been busy with Phantom Kino Ballett, a collaboration with artist Sarah Szczesny that lands somewhere between immersive audio-visual experience and performance art, allowing Willikens to indulge her transportive impulses in a completely new way. Nevertheless, it’s in the DJ booth where Willikens continues to make the biggest impact. As of late, she’s forged a particularly potent partnership with fellow sonic explorer and Salon des Amateurs alum Vladimir Ivkovic, the two engaging in a sort of mind meld that brings together their shared love of electronic music’s darkest and most bizarre corners. Regardless of whether she’s playing alone or in tandem with someone else, Willikens isn’t the kind of artist who adheres to straight lines. Expect different temperatures, different moods and a dollop of chaos, just to keep things interesting. Circuitous paths take precedence over direct routes, and although not even Willikens herself always knows the final destination, when she’s at the helm, the journey is bound to be thrilling. • Francis Harris

New York City · 22 bookings since Oct 2023

“With 20 years of DJing at the world's top clubs and almost a hundred releases under different monikers to his credit, one might think that Francis Harris had reached the pinnacle of his career, or at least firmly established his niche; but 2012 marked a pivotal year for the Brooklyn-based producer in which his true potential as a composer, producer and label executive was revealed.”

With 20 years of DJing at the world's top clubs and almost a hundred releases under different monikers to his credit, one might think that Francis Harris had reached the pinnacle of his career, or at least firmly established his niche; but 2012 marked a pivotal year for the Brooklyn-based producer in which his true potential as a composer, producer and label executive was revealed. In seeking a more subtle and emotional sound, Harris departed from his tried and true methods as a solo studio engineer, forging creative collaborations that rekindled his long dormant interest in the craft of songwriting, live instrumentation and performance. The result were the two albums Leland (2012) and Minutes Of Sleep (2014) laced with piano, guitar, cello, trumpet and vocals by Danish singer Gry Baggien, delivered on Scissor and Thread, a new label Harris formed as a platform for this highly personal expression. With newfound purpose, Harris returned to the club music arena with an entirely new approach to making music. Focused on the development of new artists for the Scissor and Thread collective, Harris has been collaborating in the studio and behind the decks with label partner Anthony Collins as Frank & Tony. Together the pair have released an array of well received EPs and the albums You Go Girl (2014) and Ethos (2024) showcasing pitched down melodic house tunes. His third solo-studio album Trivial Occupations released in 2018 followed by his newest long player Thresholds in 2022.
Their RA profile lists hfn, Scissor & Thread, hafendisko and Modelmaker.
