Setaoc Mass is an essential voice in techno and electronic music today. As a DJ, producer and label curator, his vision is bold and clear, rooted as much in techno as it is in IDM and experimental music. His sound—sleek, hypnotic, ultra-refined—is instantly recognizable, the result of tastes and techniques honed over 15 years of monklike dedication to his craft. Setaoc Mass records are routinely gobbled up by DJs lauded by shops like Hard Wax. His labels, SK_Eleven (a platform for his own music) and SK_X (an outlet for music from like-minded artists are among the best in techno. As a DJ, he is a regular on the world's most hallowed dance floors, from Berghain to Bassiani. Setaoc Mass is Sam Coates, an artist born in Manchester, long-since based in Berlin and now in Kyiv, Ukraine. He started DJing and making music after a simple experience that changed everything: a friend's older brother showing him a series of seminal music videos from artists like LFO, Aphex Twin and Autechre. Soon Coates was soaking up CLR podcasts and marathon techno sets in Berlin. The foundation for the sound of Setaoc Mass—driving, atmospheric and meticulously well crafted—was being set. In 2013, Coates moved from Manchester to Berlin and dedicated himself to music completely."From my morning coffee till I went to bed," he said, "I'd be in my small room with my headphones. No gigs, no cash, just exploring Ableton, Native Instruments, Reaktor, experimenting with different ideas, finding my sound, seeing what I liked and what I didn't like." The work paid off. In 2015, impressed by his sound, Spencer Parker tapped Coates for an EP on Work Them Records." Soon his records were in demand from institutions like Soma Recordings and Len Faki's label, Figure. But Coates was most interested in his own label, SK_Eleven, a "highly personal" project named after his home postal code that remains the primary home for his music. The sound of Setaoc Mass has always stemmed off in many directions, with ambient, electro and experimental scattered across his EPs. Then came 2022's Horror Vacui, a debut album that made a clear artistic statement: with Setaoc Mass, techno is just the tip of the iceberg. A devotee of his music's history with no patience for nostalgia, Coates has absorbed techno's legacy, and is dedicated to pushing it forward. Hailing from Ukraine and currently based in Berlin, Dmytro Avksentiev is a true visionary who seamlessly merges his passion for music with his background in cinema. With a cinematic approach to music production, Koloah creates immersive soundscapes that transport listeners into his own world. As he’s producing in different genres, you may recognize him under aliases — Tropical Echobird and Voin Oruwu. But under any name his music has always spoken of unifying raw energy. Dmytro’s discography of 15+ releases includes the experimental LP “Etudes From A Starship” on the Ukrainian label Kvitnu, his very special album Serenity which have been high ranked on Pitchfork and various club releases on such labels as Banoffee Pies, Alien Communications, Hyperboloid, Cut Records, Soulection, Car Crash Set... In 2019 he founded his own label called Salon Imaginalis — a place to release forward thinking electronic music without any genre boundaries. Drawing inspiration from his Eastern European roots, as well as the vibrant music scene of Berlin, Koloah's sound is a reflection of his diverse musical influences. Karine is an integral part of Kyiv’s Closer club as its resident DJ and booker, now based in Berlin, continues writing the club’s story in Ukraine and worldwide. Her exceptional musicality and an immense experience in mindful listening and dancing throughout the two decades we’ve known Karine, including ten years of working at Closer, have brought her to the position of a truly promising talent on the scene. With 20 years of DJing at the world's top clubs and almost a hundred releases under different monikers to his credit, one might think that Francis Harris had reached the pinnacle of his career, or at least firmly established his niche; but 2012 marked a pivotal year for the Brooklyn-based producer in which his true potential as a composer, producer and label executive was revealed. In seeking a more subtle and emotional sound, Harris departed from his tried and true methods as a solo studio engineer, forging creative collaborations that rekindled his long dormant interest in the craft of songwriting, live instrumentation and performance. The result were the two albums Leland (2012) and Minutes Of Sleep (2014) laced with piano, guitar, cello, trumpet and vocals by Danish singer Gry Baggien, delivered on Scissor and Thread, a new label Harris formed as a platform for this highly personal expression. With newfound purpose, Harris returned to the club music arena with an entirely new approach to making music. Focused on the development of new artists for the Scissor and Thread collective, Harris has been collaborating in the studio and behind the decks with label partner Anthony Collins as Frank & Tony. Together the pair have released an array of well received EPs and the albums You Go Girl (2014) and Ethos (2024) showcasing pitched down melodic house tunes.
