Who they are
“Setaoc Mass is an essential voice in techno and electronic music today.”
their own biography
the whole biography
Setaoc Mass is an essential voice in techno and electronic music today. As a DJ, producer and label curator, his vision is bold and clear, rooted as much in techno as it is in IDM and experimental music. His sound—sleek, hypnotic, ultra-refined—is instantly recognizable, the result of tastes and techniques honed over 15 years of monklike dedication to his craft. Setaoc Mass records are routinely gobbled up by DJs lauded by shops like Hard Wax. His labels, SK_Eleven (a platform for his own music) and SK_X (an outlet for music from like-minded artists are among the best in techno. As a DJ, he is a regular on the world's most hallowed dance floors, from Berghain to Bassiani. Setaoc Mass is Sam Coates, an artist born in Manchester, long-since based in Berlin and now in Kyiv, Ukraine. He started DJing and making music after a simple experience that changed everything: a friend's older brother showing him a series of seminal music videos from artists like LFO, Aphex Twin and Autechre. Soon Coates was soaking up CLR podcasts and marathon techno sets in Berlin. The foundation for the sound of Setaoc Mass—driving, atmospheric and meticulously well crafted—was being set. In 2013, Coates moved from Manchester to Berlin and dedicated himself to music completely."From my morning coffee till I went to bed," he said, "I'd be in my small room with my headphones. No gigs, no cash, just exploring Ableton, Native Instruments, Reaktor, experimenting with different ideas, finding my sound, seeing what I liked and what I didn't like." The work paid off. In 2015, impressed by his sound, Spencer Parker tapped Coates for an EP on Work Them Records." Soon his records were in demand from institutions like Soma Recordings and Len Faki's label, Figure. But Coates was most interested in his own label, SK_Eleven, a "highly personal" project named after his home postal code that remains the primary home for his music. The sound of Setaoc Mass has always stemmed off in many directions, with ambient, electro and experimental scattered across his EPs. Then came 2022's Horror Vacui, a debut album that made a clear artistic statement: with Setaoc Mass, techno is just the tip of the iceberg. A devotee of his music's history with no patience for nostalgia, Coates has absorbed techno's legacy, and is dedicated to pushing it forward. Lydo is a Filipino-born Vietnamese-American sound artist. As a resident DJ of BASEMENT NY, their distinctive sets explode the parameters of techno, deftly cutting across genres while retaining a highly personal emotional resonance. Whenever Lydo plays, it’s best to leave your expectations at the door and simply prepare for an unexpected array of sonic thrills, ranging from visceral and grooving to mind-bendingly experimental. A trans artist themselves, Lydo launched X-TRA.SERVICES to serve and create space for queer, trans, and nonbinary people of color. This ethos of care and insurgent collectivity runs through their broader practice. They have performed at Berlin Atonal, Draaimolen Festival, Bourse de Commerce, and Bassiani, as well as subterranean parties and festivals across North America, Europe, and Asia. Beyond the club, Lydo works with sound through installation, composition, and curation. Their abstract, experimental work spans museum and institutional contexts, including MoMA PS1, SculptureCenter, and Kunsthalle Basel, among others. In 2025, they launched care., an itinerant series for live and experimental sound that continues to explore new sonic forms in unexpected contexts.Their RA profile lists X-TRA.SERVICES.Recently at BASEMENT, Gabriela, Paragon · often with The Carry Nation, Juana, Shaun J. “Part Miami Bass, vintage house bounce, and tribal euphoria, Coffintexts' music is a cocktail of indulgence served straight from the queer underground.”

the whole biography
Part Miami Bass, vintage house bounce, and tribal euphoria, Coffintexts' music is a cocktail of indulgence served straight from the queer underground. When Coffintexts first burst onto the club scene in the late '10s, she was part of a new cohort of Miami producers reshaping dance music. Equally influenced by everything from 90s tribal rhythms to Latin American-inflected Club to UK rave, she emerged as part of the city's new guard. Putting out records on labels including Omnidisc, Club Romantico, Club QU, Classico, and a forthcoming record on TraTraTrax, she has quickly established herself as one of the Magic City's most vibrant musicians. Even within this crowded field, Coffintexts acts as a unique center of gravity. While drawing from the percussive promiscuity of her Peruvian heritage and the bass weight of her hometown, she also gravitated towards the cerebral funk of '90s hardgroove, wiggly house, and the chromatic polish of UK techno. Cutting her teeth in house parties and gay clubs across Miami, she's always gravitated towards the minimal, groove-focused energy of dance music at its most muscular and hypnotic. This background has put her into conversation not just with the 305, but with the larger global queer dance music cosmology and she's shared the decks with DJs like Volvox, ISAbella, and Shyboi. There aren't many producers and DJs who marry the paranoid and the psychedelic, the euphoric and the illicit, the darkroom and the big room, the mind and the body, like Coffintexts. As a producer, she's just as comfortable turning out lean and stripped back techno as she is sultry, bottom-heavy downtempo with occasional partner-in-crime Jonny from Space. Her DJing is just as adventurous. Her mixes for outlets like Crack and Mixmag showcase an ambitious and daring style where she jumps between tempos, eras, and genres without ever losing sight of that central current of hip-swinging groove. It's this intuitive and bodily approach to mixing that has kept dancefloors from Miami to Shanghai to Bristol, from Nowadays to III Points Festival to Razzmatazz gyrating and sweating it out until the early hours.Their RA profile lists Omnidisc, Femme Culture, Black Book Records, Club Qu and 4 more.Recently at Paragon, Nowadays, Elsewhere · often with Josey Rebelle, Mari Sakurai, ROBUS, none of them here that night
