    their own biography

    the whole biography
Rødhåd has been shaping his deep and driving signature sound for almost two decades since his early days in Berlin’s off-grid party scene. Starting with his first residency at the long-defunct Zementgarten in 2006, he went on playing venues and festivals of all sizes and magnitudes. Known for relentless DJ sets that meld uncompromising techno with highly emotional atmospheres and soundscapes, he’s managed to have a major impact on the world’s most cherished floors while remaining passionately independent. Rødhåd continues to abstain from excessive hype, staying very much connected to the community that formed him. In the last years he deepened his interest in the communal aspect of electronic music even further, curating excessive multipersonal live jams at places like Berghain or Dekmantel Festival. By launching Dystopian in 2009, first as a party series and later as a label, he made a distinct mark on Berlin’s techno landscape through a raw and honest vision, that felt true amid the city’s more dark and industrial edge. With releases from the likes of Alex.Do, Recondite, Distant Echoes or Rødhåd himself, Dystopian cemented itself as one of Berlins major techno trademarks throughout the decade of its existence. In 2017 Rødhåd released his debut LP Anxious, demonstrating his versatility as producer, spanning straightforward techno to dim and dusky ambient tunes. With his latest imprint, WSNWG, he created a platform for collaborative explorations in sound and texture with long-time companions and newfound friends alike. While the label’s core output remains a steady stream of dancefloor oriented 12”s it also released full-length albums that venture deeper into experimental and exploratory territories. The concept album series Out Of Place Artefacts (with Vril) takes the listener on a journey through deep introspection and otherworldly land- and soundscapes, while always always alluding to the rich tradition of electronic music in an abstract and mediated rather than direct way. Released in 2022, the LP In Vere (with JakoJako) departs from the characteristically dark and melancholic undertone of Rødhåd’s work, delving into lush, organic textures and ethereal, arpeggiated themes, also implementing elements of electronica. The sublabel WSNWG Back To Zero is devoted to solo releases and compilations, launched in 2020 through the highly acclaimed LP Mood, comprising archive material from 2017/2018, marking Rødhåd’s first purely ambient and experimental release, free of any dancefloor ambition. Over the years, Rødhåd has proved himself as a proponent of true craftsmanship, applying the same rigour to his work in the studio as to selecting and mixing records. Remaining hands-on, and keeping a down-to-earth mentality - steering clear of spectacle - has made him a long-established staple in the electronic music community.
Their RA profile lists Cocoon Recordings, CLR, Token, Wolfskuil Records and 6 more.

“Widely associated with Berlin and institutions Berghain and Hard Wax, Dettmann has remained true to his roots by consistently seeking to innovate electronic music, particularly in regards to integrating visual art and techno.”

    their own biography

    the whole biography
Widely associated with Berlin and institutions Berghain and Hard Wax, Dettmann has remained true to his roots by consistently seeking to innovate electronic music, particularly in regards to integrating visual art and techno. Raised in the former GDR, Dettmann developed his passion for electronic music early, counting new wave, post-punk and industrial music as his strongest influences – long before discovering techno and eventually immersing himself in it. Since the early 90s he has been a fixture in Berlin as both an artist and DJ, becoming a resident at OstGut in 1999. He has also held a residency at OstGut's successor Berghain since its opening in 2004 until today. Dettmann’s productions for his own MDR imprint and Ostgut Ton, as well as his compilations and mixes for fabric, Music Man, !K7 and Dekmantel sit between contemporary techno and pre-techno, providing a unique aesthetic at once reduced and rough, emotional and unpredictable.
Their RA profile lists Music Man Records, BPitch, Ostgut Ton, Rekids and 6 more.

  • Massimiliano Pagliara

Stemming from Lecce Massimilano Pagliara has been based in Berlin for several years where he's been one of the main forces behind recombining the city's hardboiled techno scene with an often overlooked sensibility for the soft and the tender. Call it underground disco passion. Massi describes his style as an eclectic mix of house, disco, electro and techno – one may call it current-yet-classic. DJing has since led to production. These days Massi lets his obsession with analog synths run wild – usually he's holed up in his apartment studio, working on his latest productions. Massimilano's last and sophomore album, ‘With One Another’ (LARJ, 2014), was about celebrating the joy of human encounters and in parts seemed like a big get-together with like-minded artists and friends. The record quickly hit the number one spot in Groove magazine's album chart – and its creator hit the road. Besides his busy DJ schedule and far from the usual club circuit routines, the Panorama Bar resident dedicated himself to intense travelling and exploring the world anew. ‘Feel Live’, Massimiliano's third full-length endeavour was recorded in several intimate, sometimes improvised studio settings between Los Angeles, Portland, and Massimiliano's homebase in Berlin as well as at airports and on intercontinental flights high up in the sky – Massi's most playful and imaginative work to date. It's as emotional as sensual, as vibrant as the first ray of light after a thunderstorm has cleared the air.
Their RA profile lists Ostgut Ton, Balihu, Meakusma, Live At Robert Johnson and 6 more.

  • James Axon

“James Axon is a DJ, musician, and creator of the LA-based queer underground party Planet Love, as well as a resident on Dublab with his radio show Hearing Color.”

    their own biography

    the whole biography
James Axon is a DJ, musician, and creator of the LA-based queer underground party Planet Love, as well as a resident on Dublab with his radio show Hearing Color. A lifelong pianist turned obsessive record collector, James Axon approaches DJing as an extension of musicianship. Before falling into house and techno, he spent years in bands and orchestral ensembles, a background that still shapes the way he thinks about rhythm, harmony, and structuring his sets compositionally. As a keyboardist and musician, he has collaborated with Seven Davis Jr. and Massimiliano Pagliara, and as a DJ has shared lineups with the likes of Octo Octa, Eris Drew, Avalon Emerson,The Blessed Madonna, Derrick Carter, Paramida, Peach, Moxie, Alex Kassian, Zombies in Miami, Jennifer Loveless, Sally C, Tornado Wallace, Perel, Eli Escobar, Paurro, and more. His sets drift seamlessly between house, techno, italo, electro, disco, and breaks, guided by an expansive taste shaped by pioneering artists like Aphex Twin, Kraftwerk, Giorgio Moroder, Jeff Mills, Laurent Garnier, Andrew Weatherall, and Francois Kevorkian. His sets are always colorful, eclectic, and intuitively reflective of the setting -- whether playing cosmic disco in an intimate loft or hypnotic techno in a dark foggy warehouse, he still finds a sound that is distinctly James Axon: melodic and synth-heavy, driving and dreamy.

“Born and raised in Queens, a city dweller and a club kid, Kilopatrah has an innate and superlative gift for transferring energy from the booth to the dance floor—through exciting house, techno, and jungle, and moments that both harken to Sound Factory–era glory days and bring you to sweaty BPMs of the future.”

Born and raised in Queens, a city dweller and a club kid, Kilopatrah has an innate and superlative gift for transferring energy from the booth to the dance floor—through exciting house, techno, and jungle, and moments that both harken to Sound Factory–era glory days and bring you to sweaty BPMs of the future. Their sets are palpably personal: The dance floor has always been a powerful platform for expression for Kilo, once as a freeing and connecting space for a quiet house dancer and now as one for moving others like them. When Kilo gets going, you’ll lose sense of the kick drum versus the beat of your own body against the floor. That’s a gift from them to you, and your percussion is a gift back to them. Kilo brings their energetic sass to a monthly Lot Radio residency and to parties with impressive lineups, playing alongside Todd Terry home in New York, at the legendary Movement weekend Club Toilet in Detroit, and for Boiler Room. Their mixes, for series such as Coloring Lessons, Honcho, and Juanita’s, and for spots on Rinse and Refuge, also capture the club at its most euphoric. You’ll step a little harder with Kilopatrah Jones. Words by Sacha Madadian
