    their own biography

    the whole biography
Jeffrey Sfire is originally from suburban Detroit, where he was introduced to underground dance music and illegal warehouse parties as a teenager in the 90's. This escape from suburbia led him to the dancefloors of the city’s most talented DJs and musicians, who soon exposed him to a new culture of creative riches. Learning by example, Sfire’s taste and skills as a DJ developed naturally and he soon began playing out at parties, clubs and sleazy gay afterhours, entering covertly through back doors or with a fake ID. At the age of 18, a move to Chicago led Sfire to a whole other side of dance music history, including the Italo Disco and High Energy sounds of the 1980s. He spent afternoons digging through record store crates, meeting retired DJs and developing his musical palette. Jeffrey’s style is absolutely unique and clearly tied to the roots of his midwest upbringing and he can be found working the floor out with italo, high nrg, chicago house, and everything WBMX. Having held numerous club residencies, he regularly plays in LA, Detroit, Chicago, and New York, consistently offering a finely-tuned selection at clubs like Basement and Nowadays in NY, Panoramabar Berlin, and Hot Mass in Pittsburgh. He also has a hand in producing parties such as Detroit's infamous Movement weekend queer rager, Club Toilet, and collaborating with Justin Cudmore on a new monthly Sunday party at Signal (NY). Jeffrey is also a gifted producer and one half of production projects: Sfire (with Sophie), Looky Looky, and Pushing Movies with releases on labels such as Dark Entries, Cocktail D’Amore Music and Ultramajic, while his mixes have long been prized for their depth and quality and are often featured as RA mix of the day.

    their own biography

    the whole biography
BEIGE by name but definitely not by nature, the DJ’s 2022 set at the beloved Honcho Campout is a perfect example of their singular appeal. A meandering journey through murky house cuts, swaggering funk, dreamy indie dance and unapologetic pop, it also never veers too far into chinstroke territory — Talking Heads, The Pussycat Dolls, Frank Ocean, Tina Turner and Dolly Parton all make unexpected appearances in various guises. “It’s about playing with tension and contrast,” says BEIGE, “bringing in things that the audience are familiar with and seeing how you can subvert them, so maybe you recognize the vocal but it's with arrangements you've never heard before.” Based in Detroit and vinyl-trained, BEIGE specializes in multi-hued, carefully considered and highly danceable sets such as this. Whether they’re playing smooth R&B and downtempo soul, crunchy electro, cheeky disco edits or oddball tech house, the only constant in their sets is quality. They made their club debut proper in Detroit in 2017, immediately grabbing the attention of the cognoscenti with their wide-ranging, on-point selections and silky, inventive transitions. Uninterested in gimmickry or self-promotion, they prefer to let their work speak for itself, collecting a growing number of fans and increasingly impressive bookings along the way. BEIGE grew up moving around the US but their musical journey really began in Melbourne, Australia, where they lived for a year after college in 2013. The Melbourne electronic music scene was thriving and BEIGE was introduced to festival culture and a spectrum of sounds they’d never heard before. They’d attempted to learn a few instruments while growing up but nothing stuck, and while music had always been a passion, expressed through making mix CDs for friends and scouring MySpace for new musical discoveries, they never aspired to a career as a DJ. That happened by accident, when they crossed paths with feminist DJ network Seraphine Collective in their new home of Detroit in 2015. Seraphine was offering sliding-scale vinyl DJing workshops, and BEIGE caught the bug instantly. “We would just go to each other's houses and spend hours round robining with random dollar bin records and it was purely for fun, which I’m grateful for,” they say. “If I ever had a notion in my mind that I was trying to do this professionally or for a particular reason I think it would have poisoned it from the start.” Before long, however, BEIGE graduated from playing friends’ parties to their first real gig at Detroit’s Temple Bar and shortly afterwards, an all-vinyl set at Marble Bar with the late, great Mike Huckaby in February 2018. It was a defining moment that also marked the beginning of BEIGE’s professional career — i.e. being paid to DJ in Detroit two-three times weekly, as well as more regularly in places like New York. They hold down a residency at Brooklyn’s renowned The Lot radio and are regularly booked for the city’s most forward-thinking parties at venues such as Nowadays, Good Room and Mansions. Their biggest boost, however, came via the support of esteemed DJs and producers Eris Drew and Octo Octa, who recognized in BEIGE a special talent. The T4T LUV NRG label owners began booking BEIGE to play parties and a Boiler Room with them, then released BEIGE’s AMEN! Volume 1 mixtape in April 2022. A showstopping devotional party mix covering more than three decades and many variants of house music, it highlighted BEIGE’s technical skill and savvy alongside their impeccable taste. They debuted at Detroit’s Movement Festival that same year and have been on a hot streak ever since, embarking on their first international tour early in 2023 which included stops at Berlin’s Panorama Bar and Amsterdam’s De School. BEIGE returned to Movement Festival as part of a marathon of gigging over Memorial Day weekend in Detroit this year, culminating in a sunrise back to back set with Octo Octa to close the celebrated Return to the Source event for New York institution The Bunker. Other scheduled 2023 highlights include a return to Europe to play Body Movements festival in London and Draaimolen Festival in the Netherlands, and their first appearance at the coveted Sustain Release festival in upstate New York. As likely to play a huge hit as to introduce you to your new favorite track, BEIGE occupies an important niche between their stuffier and less imaginative peers. When the conditions are right, they endeavor to create transcendental dancefloor moments akin to opening a wormhole, “where everybody in the room is collectively participating in this consciousness-melding experience and I'm just the conductor.” Armed with a healthy disrespect for genre and convention and a discerning but unpretentious music collection, BEIGE aims to please, but more commonly thrills, delights, and inspires.
Their RA profile lists T4T LUV NRG.

  • Derek Plaslaiko

    Detroit · 5 bookings since Nov 2023

“Many DJs have reputations defined by a certain place and time.”

    their own biography

    the whole biography
Many DJs have reputations defined by a certain place and time. Not so for Derek Plaslaiko, whose 20-year career behind the decks has seen him gather a loyal fan base wherever and whenever he may be. Some will know Derek as a favorite of the mid-90s Detroit warehouse scene, which lead to a personal invite from Carl Craig to appear at the inaugural Detroit Electronic Music Festival in 2000. Others recognize him from his near decade-long residency at The Bunker New York parties, during which time he was named “Best Techno Party DJ” by the Village Voice in 2006. Then there was the summer of 2011 spent behind the decks at Berlin’s infamous Club der Visionaere, as an honorary resident at the weekly Visionquest nights—a worthy introduction to the city he now calls home. Of late, there is a new generation of party people who will know Plaslaiko from his extended sets (up to 12 hours) in New York, Paris, Seattle, Los Angeles and Philadelphia, or his regular appearances at clubs like Tresor, Hot Mass, Beta, Output, Smart Bar and Berghain, and festivals like Decibel, Communikey and Movement. Or some who caught his name on the flier for the No Way Back series of parties put on by Interdimensional Transmissions, the Detroit imprint that has put out several of Plaslaiko’s rare original releases, along with Perc Trax and Minus. There are tens of thousands of others who caught on to Plaslaiko following his record-breaking 12-hour Boiler Room set, where he gave viewers a look into his living room, while friends and friend’s toddlers enjoyed the day. This landmark session properly archived the full Plaslaiko musical experience, from flawless house and techno, to hip-hop, classic rock, and whatever other musical moment this life-long record obsessive chooses to share. And let’s not forget the thousands of folks who have befriended Plaslaiko while sharing the dance floor with this committed clubber who refuses to hang out in the booth and will always skip the DJ dinner in favor of catching one of his peers behind the decks. Wherever one picks up Plaslaiko’s story, maybe during his days dealing discs in Detroit’s famed Record Time dance room or possibly the years spent moving serious weight at Watts and Syntax Distribution, the one constant is top-shelf musical taste, as defined by Plaslaiko’s personal heroes—names like Laurent Garnier, Daniel Bell and Zip, and colleagues including Carlos Souffront, Jason Kendig and Mike Servito—and a passion for music that over-rides the usual trappings of the modern DJ industry. This may mean to some that Plaslaiko is still unsung. But for those who know better (and there are many all over the world), praise for Derek has been sung for decades.
Their RA profile lists M-nus, Spectral Sound, Perc Trax, Anozer and 6 more.
