  • Danny Tenaglia

“The tale of Danny Tenaglia's love affair with music, and the world's subsequent romance with him, is one of the critical veins in the body of dance music.”

    their own biography

    the whole biography
The tale of Danny Tenaglia's love affair with music, and the world's subsequent romance with him, is one of the critical veins in the body of dance music. He is every dancer's secret discovery; a random purchase at the record store, a reluctant night out that unexpectedly turned magic. Explosive success came not behind a major label release, or a world tour, or a radio hit remix: It happened when enough people had the private Tenaglia experience for themselves. The momentum started building in early '70s New York, when a barely 10-year-old Danny first got the feel of vinyl in his hands. Enthralled by the music of artists like Philly Soul's The Trammps, Motown's Marvin Gaye, African trumpeter Hugh Masekela, and disco producer Giorgio Moroder, he started to collect records, plumbing the depths of each one, and frequently finding that he preferred the B-side to the A. It was 1979 when he discovered legendary nightclub Paradise Garage, where DJ Larry Levan's rich, genre-less blend of music seemed to mirror his own "no boundaries" policy. It was here where Danny found the club model he would one day emulate: Levan's bold style, the venue's plain décor, and the party's warmth and inclusiveness. Danny left New York in 1985 and launched a successful DJ-ing career in Miami as a resident at Cheers nightclub. There he schooled the locals in classic New York and Chicago house, but five years later he returned home, tired of only playing other people's music. He started to assemble an impressive roster of remixes, including Right Said Fred's "I'm Too Sexy" (1991), Jamiroquai's "Emergency on Planet Earth" (1993), and Madonna's "Human Nature" (1994). But his first epic was The Daou's "Surrender Yourself" (1993): With the kick in the bass and the underlying rhythm as the foundation, Tenaglia blanketed Vanessa Daou's wispy vocal with grand, thick chords, a combination of classic groove and modern club-ready depth that was, at the time, entirely new. The title of his 1995 debut artist album on New York's Tribal Records described it perfectly: Hard & Soul. But even if the cocktail was his own, Tenaglia never hesitated to declare how heavily his influences weighed in his productions - everyone from Patti LaBelle to Kraftwerk, with countless lesser-known Soul, R&B, Latin, Samba, and Disco artists in between. In 1996, after a brief stint at New York superclub Roxy, Danny landed a Saturday night residency at white-hot Twilo, a position that upped his profile but didn't satisfy his expanding artistry as a DJ and producer. While New York swooned for big-room diva anthems, Danny was turning his ear toward the more minimal, tech-y grooves originating in European production studios. This period produced solid remixes like Grace's "Not Over Yet" (1996) and Janet Jackson's "The Pleasure Principle" (1996), but by the time he moved to Tunnel in 1998, Danny had already created "Elements," an instant classic that caused the dance scene's collective jaw to drop. With his own warped voice providing the narration, "Elements" (one track off full-length Tourism) walked the listener through the different components of a dance track in real time, going from kick to drum loop to snare hit, letting each layer over the other until the track exploded with dark, drum-heavy energy. Next to ostentatious radio anthems, its simplicity was a revelation. It was around this time that the murmurs started to get louder: Who is this Danny Tenaglia, and just what does he do to people? Clubbers reported seemingly inhuman mixing capabilities, booth-to-floor telepathy, and the grittiest "modern yet classic" grooves they had ever heard come out of a speaker. A trio of label compilations - Mix This Pussy (1994) and Can Your Pussy Do The Dog? (1995) for Tribal, and Gag Me With A Tune (1996) for Maxi - were the first Tenaglia sets clued-in clubbers could take home to dissect, but the release of his first installment in the UK-based Global Underground series of DJ mixes, titled Athens (2000), lit the international fire. Athens (meant to reflect the set he played at the Greek capital's club King Size) remains one of the darkest, strangest, sexiest sets ever released, and its tame cover photo of a gentle-looking man in a Yankee cap just didn't seem to fit. DJ dates across Europe dispelled the mystery and started the spread of the infectious Tenaglia fever. Back in New York, Tenaglia was tiring of the cavernous gloom of Tunnel and longed for a weekly home that better resembled where the DJ bug first bit him - the Paradise Garage. He landed at Vinyl, a black-walled, single-environment, no-liquor club about one-quarter the size of Tunnel. He named the night "Be Yourself," after the self-affirming, heavy-bottomed vocal track he had recently recorded with Chicago's Celeda. And he took the name to heart: Without the pressure of bar minimums or an expectant crowd, Tenaglia spread his DJ wings. Next to new tracks by young producers like Rui Da Silva, Peace Division, and Saeed & Palash, he played the artists of his youth, with nary a beat dropped. If he wanted to launch into a two-hour set of straight-up techno, he did. If he wanted to play old Michael Jackson records, he did. If he wanted to get on the mic and tell the crowd the name of the sound he was about to play, or who next week's guest opening DJ would be, or just give everyone a "verbal handshake" to welcome them to the club, he did. And a city tired of drama embraced the barebones, music-centered night. The world caught up to Tenaglia in 2000. His annual party during Miami's Winter Music Conference outgrew its home at the cramped Groovejet and moved to just-opened superclub Space. DJ giants like Carl Cox danced on top of the speakers with the Deep Dish boys, Fatboy Slim mingled on the patio, and for a day the ego inherent to DJ culture evaporated: Tenaglia was hailed as the undisputed king, the "DJ's DJ." His roof-raising revamp of Green Velvet's "Flash" won "Best Remix" at the UK's Muzik Awards, where he was also awarded the "Best International DJ" prize. In the two years that followed, Tenaglia released another Global Underground installment (London); toured the world, took the party island of Ibiza by storm, remixed Billy Nichols' "Give Your Body Up To The Music" (a Garage anthem); got nominated for a Grammy (for his remix of Depeche Mode's "I Feel Loved," also nominated for Best Dance Song); returned to Twilo for two special gigs - a President's Day marathon with Carl Cox that shattered all its attendance records, and the club's sixth anniversary party with John Digweed, which turned out to be even more meaningful than it seemed at the time (Twilo was shut down permanently a week later); graced the cover of every major dance music magazine; and won a Dancestar Lifetime Achievement award... all while keeping Be Yourself buzzing every Friday. In 2003, Danny came full circle with the release of Choice: A Collection Of Classics, a two-CD mixed compilation that let him pay direct tribute to many of the artists who had influenced his sound and style. It featured everyone from Blaze to Adeva to Imagination, as well as hefty liner notes explaining the significance of each track, penned by the man himself. He also remixed another Garage classic (Yoko Ono's "Walking On Thin Ice," which became her first Billboard number one ever), opened another Space during Winter Music Conference (the new location down the block), and took another Dancestar award, this time "Best Party" for Be Yourself. Be Yourself took the same honor again in 2004, but this time the win was bittersweet. At the time of the ceremony, Vinyl, now called Arc, had already been sold to developers. Danny closed the classic club on Sunday, April 25, 2004, with an emotional set that lasted well into Monday afternoon, and culminated with his mix of Kings Of Tomorrow's paean to unending love, "Finally." And as in every year since his DJ odyssey began, all across the globe, from Acapulco to Tokyo, more people experienced their first night with Danny Tenaglia, that clubber rite-of-passage that forever changes how you listen to music, go out to nightclubs, and think about DJs.

Boris, the long-standing Berghain resident, is deeply committed to the captivating magic that unfolds on the dance floor. This burning passion within him sparks a longing to shape, tease and playfully amplify the intensity of the dance floor action. With over two decades of experience as a producer for the likes of Ostgut Ton and Careless and as a DJ, he remains an unwavering, yet never predictable, mainstay. Renowned for his extended, scorching techno closing sets, Boris is one of the most well-versed and dedicated protagonists in Berlin's vibrant queer electronic scene. However, to pigeonhole Boris only to Berlin would be doing him a disservice. In fact, his visits to legendary clubs like Paradise Garage and the Loft in New York City have left an indelible mark on his persona and DJ style. Imagine the euphoric sounds that created a sense of belonging and ecstasy in Boris's heart while experiencing the massive pumping sound and welcoming community feeling at NYC's clubs. He brings this same warmth and playful energy to dance floors worldwide. His infectious style makes it effortless for clubbers to lose themselves in the music and partying, earning him a loyal following within the queer scene - and beyond. Whether he's playing small, intimate clubs, festivals, or his prestigious residencies such as Berghain, Faust in Seoul, or House of Mince in Sydney, Boris has the gift to take people to another state of mind where nothing matters but the music and the moment.

“New York-based artist, multi-instrumentalist, composer and vocalist Eartheater distills a three-octave vocal range, experimental digital production and classical composition into works suspended between sonic abstraction and arresting lucidity.”

    their own biography

    the whole biography
New York-based artist, multi-instrumentalist, composer and vocalist Eartheater distills a three-octave vocal range, experimental digital production and classical composition into works suspended between sonic abstraction and arresting lucidity. Her recorded output is enhanced by her viscerally emotive live performances that capture her fearless physical investment and gut-wrenching vocal sincerity. With her 2020 album, Phoenix: Flames Are Dew Upon My Skin, Earthaeter is reborn. Composed, produced, and arranged entirely by Eartheater, Phoenix draws a path back to the primordial lava lake from which she first emerged, as it also testifies to the many resurrections her project has undergone over the last decade. While the album renews her focus on guitar performance and legible structure, Eartheater balances the unabashed prettiness of acoustic harmonic songs with the dissonant gestural embroidery of oblique instrumentals. The album, released in fall 2020 via PAN, is the result of a laborious revival in fire, and recontextualizes Eartheater’s combinatorial approach to production within her most confident abstractions, adjacent to some of her most direct and affecting songs to date. Eartheater made her full-length debut in 2015, releasing the twin albums Metalepsis and RIP Chrysalis on Chicago label Hausu Mountain. In 2018, Eartheater signed to renowned experimental label PAN to release her third full-length, IRISIRI. The record laid out as a shifting network of abstract songcraft, laced with sudden structural upheavals and collisions of mutated themes from numerous sonic vocabularies, ranging from classical and experimental to electronica and metal. IRISIRI received year-end accolades from Pitchfork, The Quietus, CRACK and more, consistently named one of the best experimental albums of the year. In 2019, Eartheater pivoted with the release of the mixtape Trinity, a collection of siren songs created with her New York cohort of friends and collaborators including AceMo, Tony Seltzer, Color Plus, Dadras and more. Eartheater self-released the mixtape on her own recently launched imprint, Chemical X. The same year, she also released a collaborative EP with her friends, the experimental harp and violin duo LEYA, titled Angel Lust. In addition to her own material, she has collaborated with musicians including Show Me The Body, Moor Mother, Caroline Polachek, Dinamarca, Sega Bodega, Prison Religion and more. Eartheater’s resume is also extensive with commissions for a range of institutions and ensembles; she has scored original material for visual artist Tony Oursler and video artists Semiconductor, and has soundtracked the runway collections for fashion houses Proenza Schouler, Chanel, Acne Studios, and MUGLER (for whom she regularly models). Eartheater was also tapped by the contemporary chamber orchestra Alarm Will Sound to compose an original score of six movements that has debuted in 2018 at the Sheldon Concert Hall in St. Louis, Missouri, and has since been brought to Lincoln Center’s 2019 edition of Ecstatic Music Festival in New York. Throughout it all, Eartheater has pursued an unflinching touring schedule, headlining shows across the US, Europe, Asia and Australia, sharing bills with her contemporaries like Actress, Oneohtrix Point Never, Jenny Hval, Yves Tumor, and Juliana Huxtable, and performing at renowned international festivals like Unsound, CTM, Le Guess Who?, Donaufestival, MIRA and MoMA PS1’s Warm Up. Live performance is a central aspect of the Eartheater project, as she uses tension and improvisation to translate her intricate compositions into unforgettable corporeal expressions, often accompanied by the concert harpist Marilu Donovan (who also performs with LEYA). Additionally, Eartheater has collaborated with art duo FLUCT, and in 2017, she starred in Raul de Nieves and Colin Self’s opera The Fool at legendary NYC performance art space, the Kitchen.

    their own biography

    the whole biography
Jeffrey Sfire is originally from suburban Detroit, where he was introduced to underground dance music and illegal warehouse parties as a teenager in the 90's. This escape from suburbia led him to the dancefloors of the city’s most talented DJs and musicians, who soon exposed him to a new culture of creative riches. Learning by example, Sfire’s taste and skills as a DJ developed naturally and he soon began playing out at parties, clubs and sleazy gay afterhours, entering covertly through back doors or with a fake ID. At the age of 18, a move to Chicago led Sfire to a whole other side of dance music history, including the Italo Disco and High Energy sounds of the 1980s. He spent afternoons digging through record store crates, meeting retired DJs and developing his musical palette. Jeffrey’s style is absolutely unique and clearly tied to the roots of his midwest upbringing and he can be found working the floor out with italo, high nrg, chicago house, and everything WBMX. Having held numerous club residencies, he regularly plays in LA, Detroit, Chicago, and New York, consistently offering a finely-tuned selection at clubs like Basement and Nowadays in NY, Panoramabar Berlin, and Hot Mass in Pittsburgh. He also has a hand in producing parties such as Detroit's infamous Movement weekend queer rager, Club Toilet, and collaborating with Justin Cudmore on a new monthly Sunday party at Signal (NY). Jeffrey is also a gifted producer and one half of production projects: Sfire (with Sophie), Looky Looky, and Pushing Movies with releases on labels such as Dark Entries, Cocktail D’Amore Music and Ultramajic, while his mixes have long been prized for their depth and quality and are often featured as RA mix of the day.

    the whole biography
In just a few short years, she's cultivated an idiosyncratic sound that's shuttled her from continent to continent, assembling a tight catalog of EPs, remixes and singles that harness the energy of Latin-American and Caribbean dance sounds, infusing it into radical new structures. A DJ, producer, multi-disciplinary artist and professional astrologer, Marissa Malik was born and raised in the US before she relocated to London, bringing her hot, humid aura to rainy England. She's animated by the complex alchemy of the dancefloor, and as likely to reference experimental sounds as she is cumbia or dembow. Her debut solo release 'Industrial Princess' was released in 2021 and immediately established Malik as a force to be reckoned with, balancing unhinged futurism with heady nostalgia. Following that, the well-received 'Machete / 777' took her sound even further. But Malik's '3Eternities Beneath You' EP from 2024 is the most magical example of her mode so far, a syrupy set of hybrid bangers led by the cheekily titled 'Sinner's Dirge'. Low, slow and sultry, it's a moonlit introduction to Manuka Honey's dreamworld, brimming with psychedelic, serrated synths, bouncy bass and rattling percussion. 2025 sees Manuka Honey widen her perspective on 'Road Rage', reaching across the global club continuum to link with shapeshifting Egyptian producer ABADIR and Dutch bubbling pioneer De Schuurman. Descending on Black Acre after vital deployments on Mexico City's Naafi imprint and Florentino's own Club Romantico, Marissa Malik slows things down to a sensual crawl on opener 'Soum Bat', winding an electroid bassline through neon-lit alleyways inhabited by half-heard voices and anxious, chattering rhythms. And De Shuurman's patented woodblock cracks - best heard on his two acclaimed Nyege Nyege-released anthologies - vibrate through Malik's chorus of mutant calls on '999!', stitching Den Haag's idiosyncratic club sound into vividly colored material. On the title track, Malik harnesses her selector's knowhow to figure out a grimy mid-point between hard trance, dembow and ballroom, suspending her sawtooth synths and collapsing beats in eerie, industrial ambience. ABADIR meanwhile augments the breathless peak-time banger 'Faramanch' with celebratory instrumental punctuations and percussive flourishes, letting Malik control the direction with earsplitting kicks and ritualistic choral echoes. After last year's dreamy '3Eternities Beneath You', 'Road Rage' loops Manuka Honey into the material world once more, with all its grit, guts and glamor. Malik's skill as a DJ netted her a residency on the prestigious BBC Radio 1, and she's already maintained a four-year residency on London's Rinse FM, inviting artists like Riobamba, Joey LaBeija, Mun Sing and Chippy Nonstop to dive headfirst into the unknown. But her spirited, passionate performances have to be experienced in person. Performing everywhere from the Netherlands' Rewire Festival to OIL in Shenzhen China, she spritzes kinetic sounds from the diaspora - like Venezuelan turreo and shatta from Martinique - with stormy, industrial pressure. As a live performer, Malik has developed the ambitious 'Desenterrada del fuego', a sonic ritual in collaboration with Safety Trance that invokes the work of Palestinian-American academic Edward Said, decolonizing the art of divination with lectures, soundscapes and tarot readings. Since 2022 Manuka Honey & Baby Cocada’s SUZIO (slang for ‘Dirty’ in Spanish) event series in London has created line-ups that push the boundaries of people’s conceptions of Latin American music. The party has hosted London debuts to Latin American heavyweights such as viral Puerto Rican pop-star Villano Antillano and Latincore legend Toccororo. Featured in Metal Magazine and Vogue, the party has curated line-ups at Colour Factory, FRIEZE Art week & Maiden Voyage festival. The SUZIO atmosphere was captured in the 2024 Short film ‘EROS’ which invites viewers into Manuka Honey’s inner landscape, exploring her relationship to time and the inherent erotic energy that flows through her work.

Sissies of Mercy is the back-to-back collaboration between longtime best-friends sam & austen. Born out of their love for dancing together, their sound as a duo balances playful nostalgia and raunchy darkness to command a sweaty dancefloor. Weaving together diva-fueled house, sparkly 80's pop, nasty acid, and cheeky electro, Sissies' sets create shared moments of freedom and transcendent joy fueled by love and light.
