Who they are
“Katie Rex is one of NY’s most essential and impactful DJs.”
their own biography
the whole biography
Katie Rex is one of NY’s most essential and impactful DJs. The Bound founder and Basement resident has spent the last decade and changed pushing a singular vision of wild, uncompromising rave power. Fusing throbbing techno, ripping hardgroove, key selections from NY’s vibrant underground and nods to her foundational loves - goth & industrial - Rex has developed a well-earned reputation for turning the dancefloor on its head. Her sets move with the perfect balance of precision and controlled chaos, transmuting a gleefully grungy menace into liberatory catharsis. Rex’s career began in Philadelphia where, in true DIY spirit, she began organizing parties around a key, glaring gap. Factory Girls was Rex’s first party series, an all-femme party that highlighted some of the 2010’s most vital new artists and helped point the way forward out of an oppressively male-focused monoculture. Word spread quickly, and early alliances with NY’s Discwoman drew Rex up to NY more and more. A few short years later she found herself at the center of a cultural renaissance. Regular sets at the revered, secretive Unter party, close ties with Bossa Nova Civic Club, and in 2016, the first edition of Bound all came quickly, and Rex’s position in the culture was soon indisputable. Bound has become Rex’s calling card: a NY-based, nationally produced kink party that seeks to redefine the form. Landing at the revered institution Basement, as one of the inaugural residencies at the club in 2019. As with Factory Girls, Bound pushes back against the ensconced patriarchal power dynamics that have made many femme and queer people feel unwelcome. It instead creates a space that is directly, unapologetically for those groups, with outstanding artists to boot. Rex’s DJing at these parties inevitably sets the standard; her capacity to both wield music of brutal power and craft an immersive, captivating, even joyful journey embodies the entire ethos of the night. Through this passion for amplifying artists, Rex created a boutique label featuring releases from Dax J, Silent Servant, Terence Fixmer, Bored Lord, Kilbourne, Ireen Amnes, Kontravoid, and more. After a 6 year Lot Radio residency, featuring a host of guests including VTSS, Rebekah, Sedef Adasï, Akua, Silent Servant, and Hyperaktivist, Bound release a new mix series In 2025. Rex has become an international presence, with regular gigs across the States and overseas. Her sets have been sought after beyond the club by Boiler Room and luxury houses Ludovic de Saint Sernin, Burberry, and Parfums de Marley. Press features in Vogue, The Face, Paper Magazine, Document Journal, Vice, The New Yorker, and Nylon Magazine have lauded her as the face of a new wave in nightlife culture. As her vision has come to shape US nightlife, the power of her music has only become more honed and riveting. Born and raised in west suburban Chicagoland, Shaun J. Wright spent most of their teen years immersed in the sounds of house music. In the late 80’s and early 90’s, house music was a powerful force, permeating the mainstream airwaves of Chicago’s most prominent radio stations. With Wright being raised in the epicenter of house culture during this era, their love for dance music began to expand throughout their high school years as they partook in the underground dance scene now globally known as Juke. While in undergrad at Morehouse College in Atlanta, they developed their skills as a dancer in the vogue ballroom scene and professional dance companies. After acquiring an MA Fashion Curation from the London College of Fashion, Wright enjoyed an active career in fashion in New York City. That is where they met Andrew Butler, founder of Hercules and Love Affair, in 2008, and began a whirlwind collaboration with the ensemble as a vocalist. They spent nearly three years touring with the outfit, performing in major venues & festivals throughout North & South America and Europe. They’re also featured prominently on the ensemble’s lauded sophomore album, “Blue Songs’. Returning to Chicago in 2012 to forge their solo career, Wright began to collaborate with respected DJ and producer Alinka. Promptly after beginning their party Twirl in the spring of 2013, Wright & Alinka released their first EP, Twirl Vol. 1, on the celebrated Classic Music Company led by luminaries Luke Solomon and Derrick Carter. They continued to expand upon the brand in late 2014 with their Twirl Records debut release “Journey Into The Deep” EP which included remixes from Kim Ann Foxman and Stereogamous. The label’s output has received much critical acclaim and has been supported by DJ Mag, XLR8R, Mixmag, BBC Radio 1’s Heidi and Annie Mac, and a plethora of notable DJ’s. Wright continues to collaborate with other sought after producers including Chrissy, Kiki, System Of Survival, Stereogamous Bell Boys, Bobmo, and Nicholas, and has been released on Freerange, BPitch Control, Honey Soundsystem & Cocktail D’Amore, Discovery, Marble, and 4Lux, respectively. Wright steadily exhilarates dance floors internationally as a DJ weaving live vocals throughout their sets in locations as far and varied as: Sydney, Berlin (Panorama Bar), London, Auckland, Stockholm, Barcelona, NYC, Los Angeles and his hometown of Chicago (Smart Bar).House on 53, Deep House on 34, Tech House on 21 and Techno on 7. styles on their catalogued releasesReleased on .FREQLINK (1), Black Artist Database (1) and Leftroom (1); their RA profile also lists Defected Records, Classic, BPitch, Freerange Records and 6 more. labels on their catalogued releases and on their RA profileRecently at Green Room NYC, public records, Signal · often with Mike Servito, cotton, LYDO, none of them here that night

Lauren Flax has been a lifelong musician, starting to play the drums at 8 years old before continuing on to guitar and bass in high school. She began her DJ career in the underground dance and rave scenes of Detroit as a resident at the Motor Lounge, playing every Tuesday night along with resident DJs Mike Servito, DJ Dilemma, Jason Kendig, and Derek Plaslaiko. Flax played the very first Detroit Electronic Music Festival in 2000 on the Motor stage. While originally starting off as a jungle DJ, Flax evolved her style into a variety techno, house, and electro music. Flax moved to Chicago in 1999, where she honed in on music production while continuing to DJ. By 2002, she relocated again to Manhattan, which shortly followed the release of her first remix, "Much Finer" for Le Tigre. In 2018, Flax was introduced to DJ Haus by fellow Detroit musician and friend Jimmy Edgar, to which he quickly signed a record, resulting in "Dance Trax Vol. 16" (2018). In 2019, Flax joined the mostly Detroit-born New York collective The Bunker New York,[1] on which she released "One Man’s House is Another Woman’s Techno EP" (2019). The EP was highly successful and sold out quickly. Flax met with Brooklyn-based record label 2MR in 2019, curious to explore beyond the realm of dance music. She remixed 'Breathe' by label-mate Pale Blue, and that ended up inspiring Flax's new style of music. After the remix was released, Flax took to writing a 6 track EP, merging genres of ambient, acid house, and much more, set to come out in Summer 2021. Flax started touring the United States and Europe as a solo artist in 2019, performing live analog sets, pushing the boundaries of what a DJ is defined as.House on 39, Techno on 22, Acid House on 13 and Electro on 17. styles on their catalogued releasesReleased on WRKTRX (3), Aliens On Wax (1) and House Of Efunk Records (1); their RA profile also lists Defected Records, !K7, Toolroom Records, Nervous Records and 6 more. labels on their catalogued releases and on their RA profileRecently at Bossa Nova Civic Club, 99 Scott Ave, Signal · often with Sevyn 0000, Austin Kunis, Costume Design, none of them here that night
