    “Low key, high quality.”

    their own biography

    the whole biography
Low key, high quality. They're the four words that best sum up Ian Pooley. He has been a part of the underground from almost the moment house music arrived in Europe, and has been helping to shape it ever since. His authentic take on the genre has brought in fresh influences over the years, but never at the expense of his signature sound or in favour of a cheap hit. He’s as well informed as DJs come, so to hear him play is always a thrill. Pooley cannot remember a time without music. He basically grew up being a DJ and producer. From his earliest days in Mainz, it was the sounds of Chicago and Detroit that turned his ear. Because of that he always played more housey than many of his peers and that soon stood him apart. That same heart and soul that first appealed to him has always defined his music and helped him connect with multiple generations while serving up plenty of essential releases. His Meridian and Since Then albums were high watermarks for house music full-lengths, while he is one of few artists to remix Daft Punk (1997's 'Burnin') and have the favour returned when the French icons added their own spin to Pooley’s 'Chord Memory'. There have also been remixes of the likes of Jovonn and countless 12"s on a stream of influential labels from Innervisions to Rekids, but mostly he releases on his own Pooledmusic. What unites his sounds is that they brim with subtle artistry - the mark of someone who has mastered their craft and knows exactly what is needed to make an impact. Never too much, never too little. That was certainly the case with his Silvershower alias, which first offered up stylish, deep and minimal techno on labels like Plus8 in 1996 and then his Montage label after the new millennium. As well as a famous spell of Brazilian-influenced tunes, over the years everything from jazz to soul to Krautrock has coloured his music. As a widely respected DJ, Pooley has played at a long list of major clubs and festivals from Panoramabar to Glastonbury Festival via multiple tours of North and South America, Asia, Canada, and Australia. He’s a DJ who plays with control. The grooves flow as he fuses early classics with tasteful new tunes, always with a sense of fun honed over thousands of hours. For the first time in 17 years, Pooley is also soon to take a new live show on the road. It will be another window into the ever-essential musical world of Ian Pooley.
Their RA profile lists Obsessive Recordings, Large, NRK Music, V2 and 6 more.

“As Matthew E he fashions club-based, dancefloor slayers.”

    their own biography

    the whole biography
As Matthew E he fashions club-based, dancefloor slayers. Under that aegis he’s updated the classic Chi-town, jackin’ sound beloved of house aficionados and layered it with fractured funk, belligerent, oddball beats and mechanical soul. If Matthew E is all about the Saturday Night Fever, then, by contrast, Rekid is the slower, more deliberate, rhythmical funk of the mid-week mayhem. Its well-intentioned muscular intensity making it perfect soulful sustenance. Quiet Village is something else all together. A collaboration with long-time musical sparring partner Joel Martin (a vinyl freak, like Mr Edwards, who works in esteemed auction house Christie’s pop department), it’s sample-based music which veers from drawn out disco-not-disco delirium to evocative, under-stated soundscapes. Sea Devils - you keeping up at the back? – is undeniable electronic pop brilliance. Working with Tom from Cagedbaby, it’s the least niche of Matt’s projects and thanks to Sea Devils alluring pop dance grooves they’ll no doubt be shagging the upper reaches of the hit parade sometime soon. Last, but by no means least etc, etc, etc, is Radio Slave. Perhaps Matt’s most instantly recognisable nom de guerre, thanks in part to his inspirational melding of Kylie’s Can’t Get You Out Of My Head to New Order’s Blue Monday, this is Matt’s DJ moniker and the guise under which he completes his incendiary remixes and re-edits. However, before such sonic schizophrenia gets you calling for the men in white coats, just feel the quality and consider Matt’s legacy. Fired by the first wave of acid house, Matt gained his musical spurs by partying to dance music that was just that: music you danced to, irrespective of tribal factions. This was the raison d’être he acknowledged when he took to the decks, first at London’s legendary Milk Bar in 1992, then onto the, then, recently opened Ministry Of Sound and then to parties across the country, most notably in Wales – where he was a regular at free parties – and in Brighton, his home since 1998. His love of re-edits, dance music’s oft-forgotten backbone, led Matt into the studio himself. His own re-edits and remixes, such as the aforementioned epoch-defining re-imagining for Ms Minogue, soon gave way to his own productions and since the floodgates opened there’s been no stopping the man known as, erm, Matthew E, Quiet Village, Sea Devils, Rekid and Radio Slave. He’s released records for Skint, Soul Jazz, Classic, Whatever We Want, and he’s worked with fellow travellers, Belgium’s The Glimmers. If Matt comes up with another two projects he’ll have enough alter egos for every day of the week. Psychologists would probably have a field day with him; mercifully, we don’t have to worry about any crisis of identity, we just get to keep on dancing.
