    their own biography

    the whole biography
Honey Bun is an interdisciplinary afro-futurist artist whose work aims to reclaim the black past, affirm the black present, and demand the black future. Born in New York City, raised in Texas, and now based in Brooklyn, her selections blend the sounds of her east coast roots, southern upbringing, and the ever-evolving and interconnected sonic output of the global black diaspora. As a resident of Brooklyn’s iconic station, The Lot Radio, Honey Bun hosts her monthly show, ‘BUNTOPIA’, captivating listeners with an explorative monthly mix designed to "sonically journey through the cosmos". The sounds of BUNTOPIA extend into a party night often hosted by intimate NYC clubs, Le Bain and Mood Ring, featuring thoughtfully curated lineups of guest DJs, artists, and friends who share a similar future-forward approach to dance music. When on planet Earth, the sun sets, and the vibrant streets of Brooklyn come alive with the sounds of Soul Connection, a party series co-founded by Honey Bun and Lovie. Together and in community, they connect the mind, body and soul through an essential night of dancing and deep groove filled with glowing soulful house, disco, funk and r&b. Often selected as an RA pick of the week, the beloved party centers intergenerational Black femme DJs and prioritizes cultivating comfortable and love-filled dance floors between renowned Brooklyn clubs, Good Room, Nowadays and Public Records. Honey Bun is a highly sought after addition to any of NYC’s most exciting club nights, as a guest DJ alongside major touring international artists, and trusted by the underground scene to stand alone with the ever-precious all-nighter extended set. Her flexibility and fearlessness to take on any dance floor is reflective of her reputation as an “omnivorous selector” with a record collection and taste that runs wide and deep. While sensual and playful, she can carefully brew peak time moments of heady bass lines, famed drum breaks, and classic Detroit techno, all aiding in her natural inclination to buzz between universes with just a twist of a knob. A reputation that has earned her a newly minted residency at famed nightclub, Nowadays, in Queens, NY. Internationally recognized, Honey Bun has graced the airwaves of prominent stations such as Foundation FM, Rinse FM, Rinse France, and Balamii, along with highly-acclaimed club appearances across western Europe and the UK. Her style has earned her spots on esteemed festival lineups such as Sustain Release, Making Time, headlining the Brooklyn Mirage stage of Boiler Room Festival, and the Red Bull stage for The Governor’s Ball. She is often tapped as the local guest DJ to join international tours of artists like Disclosure, Nia Archives, HAAi, Palms Trax, Gerd Janson, TSHA, Benji B and more. Beyond her DJ work, she was previously the video host for Noisey's Questionnaire of Life and a producer of Emmy-award nominated music documentary series, The Story Of, showcasing her versatility in the music domain.

    their own biography

    the whole biography
Underneath the warm sun that hangs over Brussels, a tiny three-by-three metre shack pumps out tunes day and night to a dancing crowd of onlookers. LeFtO is at the controls of Kiosk Radio, a perfectly placed wooden hut in the centre of Parc De Bruxelles. “Good day to you all outside the Kiosk, live from the park. Thank you for coming through,” says the soothing voice of LeFtO. The chatroom pings with hundreds of messages from around the globe as the crowds gradually tune in for another session out of leftfield from the Belgian music connoisseur. Lefto Early Bird fuels a hub of listeners with an appetite for new sounds, week in, week out. Becoming a household name at Kiosk Radio, as well as mainstay station Studio Brussel, LeFtO always has his finger on the pulse. A quick peek at the DJ’s Mixcloud reveals a hearty range of genres - with everything from house to rap to jazz and more. Fusing sounds from Belgium’s melting pot of musical talent with his relentless passion for new sounds, LeFtO has gone on to work with major names and labels including Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood Recordings, Blue Note, BBE, Universal Music, SDBAN and many more. Cutting his teeth on jazz and new beat, a genre that moulded the shape of electronic music in 80s Belgium, LeFtO formed his early tastemaker know-how via his dad’s record collection. “My father mostly played jazz at home, he had a serious collection which I still own myself. I was probably 14 years old when I asked him for money to buy some records,” he says. “With a certain pride, most of what I liked was made in Belgium”. More a selector than anything else, LeFtO continues Belgium’s tireless musical legacy through his extensive palate, brimming with flavour. https://linktr.ee/lefto

  • Mawkus

“If it wasn't for radio, Mawkus would not be a DJ.”

    their own biography

    the whole biography
If it wasn't for radio, Mawkus would not be a DJ. Inspired by listening to the radio growing up in the small beach town of Ventura, he knew at a young age he needed to be a DJ. After getting his first set of turntables at 15 and spending much of his free time in local record stores, his first real foray into DJing started on college radio in 2004, playing house music on a weekly Saturday night dance mix show on KCPR 91.3 FM. Through his college radio roots, he later found himself working as a radio DJ at San Diego's Jazz 88.3 where he hosted and produced two weekly radio shows showcasing music from all over the world, both new and old, as well as jazz, blues, soul, funk and everything in between. As a DJ, his deep musical aptitude found him playing alongside and opening for a plethora of world-class talent. From opening for Body High at Moustache Bar in Tijuana to playing slow jams alongside the legendary Questlove at Santos Party House for LA's 143 takeover curated by Sosupersam, vibes are vibes with Mawkus. In addition to a string of features and accolades for his production work ranging from Los Angeles' KCRW to London's Rinse FM, his love for bringing people together and creating spaces for vibes that need to be heard, seen and felt moved him to produce events. Mawkus became a fixture in San Diego for championing the underground through his radio shows, DJ sets and events he put together. Since relocating to New York in late 2014, he began working as A&R Director for FSQ, signed to Soul Clap Records as well as joining Singapore-based label collective Darker Than Wax. He currently co-hosts two radio shows, one of which is a weekly radio show, Darker Than Wax FM, on The Lot Radio that’s featured many notable guests like that of LeftO, Scratcha DVA, Nickodemus, Photay and many more. He can also be found on KALW in the San Francisco Bay Area every Saturday and Sunday afternoon. He used to co-host a monthly show, We Move, produced by Red Bull Arts New York. You can listen to him weekly on KALW 91.7 in the SF Bay Area and KALW.org every Saturday and Sunday afternoon from 12pm to 2pm PST.

“Astrologically speaking, it’s said that water signs are characterized by their intuition, sensitivity and depth of emotion.”

    their own biography

    the whole biography
Astrologically speaking, it’s said that water signs are characterized by their intuition, sensitivity and depth of emotion. John Silas’s work is innately imbued with these qualities. Composed of four original tracks (along with two additional mixes), the producer and instrumentalist’s debut EP, Water Sign, is largely joyously attuned to the dance. Yet these compositions diverge into moments of quieter introspection evocative of a kind of personal chronicle. For John, who’s seen more than his share of nomadic movement buoyed by periods of meditative creativity, it’s a reflection of lived experience: a journey that’s synthesized the influences of childhood Soul Train episodes, adolescent hip-hop sample spotting, tutelage on the MPC2000XL, collaboration with extended family within the Detroit dance music community, record shop clerkdom, and his current citizenship on the planet of nouveau Brooklyn. It’s also an approach entirely at home within the ethos of Love Injection Records - an outpost that’s long championed sounds that span the visceral expanse.
