Disco is the beating heart beneath nearly every form of electronic dance music that followed it. Its emphasis on the extended mix, the DJ as storyteller, and the dancefloor as a space of communal liberation laid the foundation for house, techno, and everything in between. Born in the underground clubs and loft parties of 1970s New York, it was music made by and for Black, Latino and queer communities who found sanctuary its four-to-the-floor pulse.
Chicago treasure Mark Grusane, former co-owner of the legendary Mr. Peabody Records and a dancefloor devotee since the early '80s, brings an encyclopedic passion and emotional narrative fostered by decades of digging. Naming Mark Grusane as a mentor, Chicago-based DJ, collector and Work Ethic party organizer Inés's sound has been shaped by the city's deepest underground traditions.
Representing New York, Soul Connection co-founder Lovie brings her community-minded spiritual depth to the dancefloor — as comfortable in the transcendent jazz and R&B end of the spectrum as she is in soulful, body-rocking house, tonight, she focuses on the foundational sounds of disco.

Inés is a Chicago based DJ, record collector, party organizer, and visual artist. Her interest in dance music was focused during her time working at the renowned underground party Durty Truth, and later through her own party, Work Ethic. She credits Darryn Jones and Mark Grusane (alongside many others) as major influences and mentors in forming her taste in the more obscure corners of disco and soul, as well as helping her form a relationship with music based in honesty, courage, and trust in the higher power of sound. Work Ethic remains her labor of love: month after month, Inés and a team of Chicago's best push to keep putting on one of Chicago's most beloved independent parties. The party's notable guests always share one trait: They work hard.“Lovie's musical discovery began in the digital music age: a young lover of local radio and after-school MTV marathons, her early mixes took shape in the form of burned CDs she made for her friends.”

Lovie's musical discovery began in the digital music age: a young lover of local radio and after-school MTV marathons, her early mixes took shape in the form of burned CDs she made for her friends. After relocating from her hometown of Washington, D.C. to New York in 2020, Lovie's unique selection of soulful, spiritual music swiftly ushered her into New York's local music scene. At the taste-making Brooklyn radio station, Lot Radio, she gave birth to her homey platform, summer school radio. For five years Lovie's radio mixes—now being offered as one of the station's few weekly residencies—have thumbed through the intimate corners of her music collection. She saunters through slow-groove disco, dusty '70s funk and groovy '80s jazz at a studied pace that makes it easy to marvel at every timeless chime, trill, and drum beat. She's as tempted by the bedroom pop of Clairo as much as the cosmic funk of Lonnie Liston Smith. Outside the Lot, Lovie presents summer school radio as soothing listening sessions around Brooklyn, providing warm balms for city fatigue with artists like alt-jazz harpist muva of Earth and New Age legend Laraaji. As co-founder of Soul Connection with long-time friend and collaborator, Honey Bun, she imbues the power of friendship and Black femme empowerment into sumptuous house music and '90s R&B spun with the patience and musicality associated with the East Coast house tradition. Connecting the mind, to the body, to the soul, her club sets inspire the warmest, most community-minded dance floors you'll find in the city. Her diligence to the craft, musical curiosity, and deep focus on the listening experience earned her a spot on Mixmag's Top 25 Breakthrough DJs of 2024. She now holds a coveted residency at Brooklyn club public records, and has played at art centers like MoMA, Brooklyn Academy of Music and The Beacon Theater, where she opened for Kamasi Washington. Her work has also brought her to international gigs at Paris's Djoon, London's Spiritland, and more. Whether playing on her stomping grounds or rocking dance floors overseas, Lovie creates honey-sweet dance floor memories you'll want to replay again and again.Recently at public records, Signal, Weeksville Heritage Center · often with Honey Bun, JADALAREIGN, Jenifa Mayanja, none of them here that night

Music has always been an integral part of Mark Grusane’s life, from his Chicago childhood in the early ‘80s to his globe-trotting career as a DJ and producer. His passionate, intuitive style coupled with an encyclopedic knowledge of all things house and disco has made him a favorite among dancers and DJs alike. Mark’s selections always come from the heart, mixing technical prowess with perfectly timed groovy selections that are not just obscure but also filled with emotion. His unique style and command over the dancefloor comes from a lifetime of digging, listening and making music. Growing up surrounded by numerous individuals involved in Chicago DJ, music and club culture played a crucial role in his upbringing, shaping him into the person he is today. Mark started collecting music with his older brother as a pre-teen, his early taste also shaped by the sound of local radio WBMX. In high school he was already DJing on college radio WKKC and spending his lunch breaks making music with friends. With his record collection exponentially growing and his thirst for music nowhere near quenched, he began to sell some to his peer and older DJs. This passion led to creation of Mr. Peabody Records with fellow music fanatic Mike Cole in 2004, which soon became a go-to source for local and international diggers alike. Sadly the brick-and-mortar store closed its doors in 2012, but Mark continued to bring his incessant curiosity and love for music into the world through compilations and edits series. He now runs the Disctechno Music, which aims to showcase his diverse passion for dance music from friends and affiliates, as well as his own original productions. Mark has played many revered clubs and festivals, such as Dekmantel, Panoramabar, Bassiani, Djoon and Nowadays. Be it through his mixes, DJ sets, edits or productions, Mark always knows how to create a cohesive, highly emotional narrative you’re bound to want to revisit over and over again.Their RA profile lists BMG, BBE, Rush Hour Music and SpaceDust Records.Recently at H0L0, Good Room, Bossa Nova Civic Club · often with Shawn Dub, Salar Ansari, Quartet, none of them here that night
